What is a "sober club?"

I'm new to this support group and fairly new to AA (less than 1 year). I was browsing the posts on the discussion of what to do for the 4th of July, and saw the term "sober club." I've heard of sober dances, but not sober clubs. Is this common in certain parts of the U.S. (I'm from R.I.).

For example... in San Antonio, TX there is a place called Club 12. The club is an entity unto itself. It's open 17 hours a day. There are meetings throughout the day but each meeting is autonomous from the club. They each pass the basket and a certain amount goes to pay "rent" to the club for having the meeting.
The club hosts dances and other activities as well. All sober

If you ever get down to Key West, Florida, be sure to check out "Anchors Aweigh" ... and tell 'em "Big Book Joe" sent you!

Hi sbw, welcome to the group. Our aa here downunder organises sober functions, your might too. http://www.rhodeisland-aa.org/
I also read on your profile you are a Christian and a runner. Local Christian groups and running clubs also offer a good sober outlet for social gatherings. Hey, I loved RI. Sailed in there from Boston during the Tall Ships regatta. People there were wonderful. Coogee xxx

I haven't heard of any, Blues. I think it is a pretty cool idea though. Anyone else in the UK heard of one in our green and pleasant land?

No, none around this part of UK. I think it would be a great idea as i'm still relatively new to my area.

I know of a great sober club,,,, and it's called jail. Hellasobriety.
On a more serious note, we also have a club known as home avenue, like 2 meeting's a day. Unfortunately it is saturated with card signer's. This is when I get to see the ol' schooler's gripe, and I pretty much see there point.

As far as I know, we have never had sober clubs in the UK. The General Service Board for Great Britain decided some time back that they cannot support the idea because they believe it goes against AA Traditions.
You might find a mention of such things in the AA Guidelines for Great Britain which can be obtained free of charge from GSO.

The clubs I have seen follow the traditions in that each nothing but a place, no different then a church basement, each meeting pays "rent" and the meetings are held in rooms off the "club" room
