AA's higher power
Watch this

I've been around AA off and on since 1983 and heard people speak of a higher power even if they were atheists or agnostics.

I've never understood really how making oneself believe in a higher power that isn't God, the creator, could really help.

I know the whole theory behind the idea........ that addicts lose faith in themselves and their own abilities to not feed their addiction any longer so they need to believe in something besides themselves but I just don't understand how believing (as I've heard the example) the doorknob or some other thing is a higher power.

Can someone explain how this helps?

Maybe what AAers are getting at is -- if you believe that something is helping you so greatly psychologically then eventually the somatic will follow. Like, cure the mind, cure the body with the thought process.

But in this case of addiction and believing in a higher power that really has no power to help it seems to me in AA people are tricking the mind and then the body follows. And that is great as long as it works but I don't see how, in a moment of weakness, thinking that something other than God can help.

" My story is similar to yours Blues, my God is not a biblical or religious god either. I try to keep open-minded as I don't believe any one of us can really know, just know OF Him. I have found I can sense He is there within me and others who seek Him, whatever way He makes His presence known. I don't know if God is actually "He" - it is just a reference point. I like to have some picture of God in my mind. "

" you never find peace until you truly find God - IMO -

i took was on a dry drunk for 10 years until I truly took a turn in my spiritual life -

Even throughout my drinking days - i have never believed in any other faith than God - (well there was a bout of time i dabbledin the occult) but I DO RESPECT what others want to believe and i pray for their souls - no matter what they believe. I have found that i too have touched lives with my belief and it's not been by words, it's been by actions, my change of mine and the Written Word of God -

i personally think AA uses the terms Higher Power as not to step on anybody's toes - and so that they can reach out to all - but there is an underlying message to that, BUT NOT MATTER - even if you are raised Christian, which I was, YOU MUST COME TO GOD on your own, just like making a choice of sobriety is an on your own thing - if you think about - IT'S ALL ABOUT CHOICES in all you do and those CHOICES have to be made ON YOUR OWN.

i once had a boss who converted from Christianity to Buddishm - odd thing - as "peaceful and zenish" her life appeared to be - her world was slowly crumbling down - and without going into details of the falls - not to long ago she stepped back and relooked at her life and said uhm - without the God I used know in my life, it appears I have no life - I told her to follow her heart - you can meditate and practice a zenful kind of ilfe even as a Christian, she said you know I am really gonna think about it -

HP's to me are Hewelitt Packards - God is God, the creator of the heavens and earth - I pray for those who think otherwise - life here is temporary the human body, mind and soul is such a fasciniating piece of creation - it didn't just happen - SOMETHING CREATED IT and that something is GOD -

Life here on earth is so temporary - living a life for eternal happiness, IMO, is what it's all about.

No offense to anyone - but I a living and breathing proof, that with God out your - life is hell - with God in your life - life is Peace - it's not perfect - and dominos will fall and things do happen - God didn't promise perfection on life - perfection awaits in heaven.

Peace to you all! Again, no offense to anyone - "

" BTW, Just accepting that this world has been here for million's of years and knowing that I don't even add up to a speck of dust in the whole picture, this fuels my humble tank and let's life roll alot easier.
When they say i KNow there is something more powerful than me, and I don't have to understand it, I turn to faith that things will be OK.
More will be reavealed, meanwhile I'will stick around. "

" I've mentioned this before, I didn't get the God stuff at first, so I used stand-ins to get me through the steps. Did the job. I believed I had a powerful HP. Group of Drunks, even had a Mach Truck at one stage, then came my big HP. The mirror image of myself, just a tad stronger. My protector from my deepest darkest pains. Very selective that one. But something was missing...

I was guided to God by the selfless sharing of others in their personal experiences of faith, never telling me how it should be, just how it was like for them. God, HP's, it's all a personal journey of spiritual growth and maturity. My relationship with God today took a long time to come about. Each of us grows at a different pace. CM xxx "

Yes, and there simply is no other!

However, He really does not mind too much that folks who yet misunderstand Him as "mean and nasty" or whatever might still fear Him in an unnecessary way or even be angry at Him. Rather, and just like any loving father (with a thundering velvet hand!) would do, He holds us close to Himself anyway as long as we do not intentionally slap Him and spit on Him, then run away to some other-and-quite-lifeless "god". " leejosepho,

I so agree, people read the O.T. and think that God is mean and I can see why but they're aren't reading the entire thing and at least as I learn about it, I see God as not being mean, he's just strict in some cases and in some, not at all.

The Bible tells us to call him Abba, which means daddy. I love that.

I'm so thankful I started actually studying the Bible and am truly starting to understand it.

My husband has read the Bible 3 times now and is on his 4th. We have bought so many DVDs on the subject of the Bible to learn a bit of the languages of the Bible, the culture of the people, a bit about archeology etc. and and it has become such a part of our lives and we find it new and exciting even when we've read certain parts more than once because we get something new every time. I've been told that's why it's called the "Living Bible" because you learn every time even when re-reading. "

" AA;s higher power is finding your own higher power. If you don't want to go to AA that is your choice, but I can tell you that alcoholism is serious disease. It's not for anyone to tell you what works and what doesn't you have to find that for yourself. If you are happy and not worried about alcoholism that is good for you. I have never seen anybody forced to go to AA, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. But if you find you need help they are alway's there for you. Alcoholism is a lifelong disease, so you may need them someday. Until then take care of yourself, questioning a bunch of stuff doesn't help at all, I have been there myself, you can't rationalize alcoholism away.I know what works for me and for me only. I never have to explain my disease to anyone, I know I have it and I know what I must do. "
