What is AA?

This post is not intended to get anyone's ire up. I'd like to have a respectful debate about it.
I was just listening to Clancy I. about AA's primary purpose, and he said something which--right or wrong--I've believed for a long, long time. AA is one alcoholic reaching out to another alcoholic and helping them to see that they are really not alone or unique in their alcoholism, and that there is a way to stay sober and find meaning in life. AA is not the Big Book or meetings, because AA existed before we had these things. AA's used to meet around kitchen tables. It is not spirituality, understanding or love...these are adjuncts to AA but not definitions of it. The primary purpose of AA is for one alcoholic to help another. That is the message that I want to carry to the newcomer. "I am here for you, and together, we can stay sober. Here's how it worked for me..." Posted on 07/01/09, 02:07 pm |

nondrinker: It is the 'Primary Purpose' or mandate of AA, first envisioned back in Akron, Ohio in1935. You can find it referenced in the Big Book and/or the traditions of AA.
I don't believe AA proper has a problem with other recovery groups adopting that philosophy.

I don't drink, I strive to be the best person I can be and I reach out to the alcoholic who still suffers. I think we're all on the same page with respect to this. By golly, I think I've discovered what we all have in common. Our differences are not as important as our common purpose.

I also mean to be careful, respectful and non-contentious here ...
Intentionally or otherwise, NG makes the point well: A.A. is far from being the only "place", as such -- A.A. is actually only an ad-hoc society of permanently-recovered and spiritually-anonymous alcoholics gathering together as autonomous fellowships or "groups" -- where people try to help other people overcome on thing or another. However, A.A. is also the only "place", as such, where only alcoholics try to help other alcoholics ... and that leaves some folks with a very real dilemma when they "take issue" or whatever with one thing or another either in or about A.A.: They have no place else to go. Personally, I have absolutely no problem with anyone being in A.A. for any reason at all. However, that does not mean they are also welcomed to re-describe what we actually are to others at will. Bottom line? A little intellectual honesty is all it takes for myself and anyone else to get along just fine!
