This post is not intended to get anyone's ire up. I'd like to have a respectful debate about it.
I was just listening to Clancy I. about AA's primary purpose, and he said something which--right or wrong--I've believed for a long, long time. AA is one alcoholic reaching out to another alcoholic and helping them to see that they are really not alone or unique in their alcoholism, and that there is a way to stay sober and find meaning in life. AA is not the Big Book or meetings, because AA existed before we had these things. AA's used to meet around kitchen tables. It is not spirituality, understanding or love...these are adjuncts to AA but not definitions of it. The primary purpose of AA is for one alcoholic to help another. That is the message that I want to carry to the newcomer. "I am here for you, and together, we can stay sober. Here's how it worked for me..." Posted on 07/01/09, 02:07 pm |

Note: I have posted links on previous threads which talk about Carl Jung's influence on the 12 steps of AA. Carl Jung was the father of inner child work and this influence was not lost on Bill Wilson, who came up with the idea of one alcoholic talking to another to achieve sobriety. This is very basic stuff and no secret.
On an aside, I really don't like dealing with ambush tactics on threads because it's hard to have functional debate when you do. Let's not get into self righteous posturing, because that's just silly. No one here has more authority than anyone else.

What a wonderful site this would be if people just stuck to their own experience, strength and hope instead of critiquing and picking apart each and every thing someone else shares. C'mon now. None of us is qualified to do that. How about simply making suggestions instead of looking for what's wrong with everyone else?

What is AA? ITs a fellowship of alcholics reaching out to help others understand there is softer way to life.... not easier but softer..... It saved my life i just didn't know it till now.....

glad2b: Thank you for your insights. I totally agree with you. This site could be so much better if people shared their experience strength and hope, and saved the resentments, controlling attitude and anger for their sponsors. lol I know people are human and we all have emotional slips from time to time. I guess the true gauge of wellness is to be able to recognize that, take it to your sponsor to work through, and make amends if necessary. (I've done this.)
Luckily you don't see the theatrics found on this board in AA proper very much. I hope newcomers realize that. The anonymity found in cyber space seems to breed contempt. I don't know what else it could be. I just think you wouldn't see the same level of controversy if we were all meeting face to face.
