Weight Changes after Quitting Alcohol?

Hi,
I was wondering about other's experiences in weight changes after you first quit alcohol. I sort of expected to lose weight pretty quickly, as according to my calculations, I was consuming at least 1700 - 1800 calories a day in just alcohol. But, I haven't changed my diet at all since I stopped drinking about two weeks ago, and if anything - it seems I may have gained a couple of pounds. Any feedback you have from personal experience would be appreciated! Posted on 02/17/08, 07:02 pm |

Hi, just thought i'd comment on this one because my weight has been really bothering me. Since i quit i have gained about 15-20 pounds and it really, really sucks. I am an emotional eater, and so i ate quite a bit in the beginning of my sobriety. At first it didn't bother me at all. In fact is was almost reassuring that i didn't fit into my bar clothes anymore... another reason not to go out partying!! But now, as i am becoming more confident with my sobriety, i want to go back into the world but i am FAT! So far, my weight gain is the one negative that i've experienced with my recovery... but with anything else, it's a matter of motivation to do something about it. I wanted to quit drinking badly enough... i guess i don't quite want to lose weight as much as i think?? Who knows... but even so,my worst day sober ( even being chubby )is still better than my best day drunk!

well @ 1st i did lose a few pounds. but then once i got a lil more sobriety behind me, i began to gain. the sugar cravings for me are OUTRAGEOUS!!! i cant control them.
i would NEVER allow myself to eat ne of the things tht i do today. the food just actually taste good, ya kno? and ill admit that for a minute it did eat @ me about the weight gain and the thot of becoming fat!! but shortly afterwards i was as if it were wiped from my mind. i mean i do still try and be aware of my intake. and some days i do wonderful and then naturally, other days are not so wonderful. (as far as what i eat) so i diceided a while back that i will take NEW, HAPPY, JOYFUL, GREATFUL and most of all the SOBER me, over the skinny, miserable, self loathing, guilt ridden OLD self! i have really learned so much about so many different aspects of my life since becoming sober. like i need to accept myself for who and how i am. which is something i was NEVER able to do b4 in my life. and its so much easier to do today, and feeling it brings is amazing. so, tho i totally understand ur concern, i say try really hard NOT to focus on ur weight (@least for now) and do focus on ur amazing accomplishment of no longer drinking!!! AMEN&GOD BLESS

Your body gets used to all the quick sugar lift from alcohol, so when a alcoholic does stop drinking they wind up be coming hyperglycemic and crave sugar..also beer drinkers usually develope yeast saturation from beer which can cause tiredness, bloating,"brainfog" and so forth. Add more protein to your diet as well as fruit and vegetables to allow your body to adjust and get back to a non drinking state. they are yeast cleanses that you can buy to get rid of the yeast, you can also add sour kraut to your diet to help flush the yeast out also..

I've been trying to loose weight for 2 years but always failed because I would drink than eat a lot. I gained about 80 pounds from drinking. Since I have lost 20 of that, but only because I have been following a program. The first 2 weeks after I quit I thought I would loose weight too, if only water weight. I didn't start eating more either, but I didn't.
I have reolized I have a slow metabolism and can only loose weight if I eat below 1400 calories a day and exercise at least 5 hours a week. That's how I have lost the 20 pounds, but I still have 60 to go :(

In my experience I lost weight and couldn't put it back on. I still don't gain much no matter of I eat a lot or not. My wife is a nurse and told me I was drinking too much water I told her she was full of shit because I had never heard of that. It turns out that exsessive amounts of water washes all the nutrients out of your system. I thought that it cleansed your system. So if you want to lose weight thats how you do it.Keep in mind I was drinking about 24 bottles a day.
