Weight Changes after Quitting Alcohol?
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
Hi,
I was wondering about other's experiences in weight changes after you first quit alcohol. I sort of expected to lose weight pretty quickly, as according to my calculations, I was consuming at least 1700 - 1800 calories a day in just alcohol. But, I haven't changed my diet at all since I stopped drinking about two weeks ago, and if anything - it seems I may have gained a couple of pounds. Any feedback you have from personal experience would be appreciated!

" The first month after I quit I could not eat so I really lost weight. THen I got into these sugar binges, so I am at about the same, maybe less, than my drinking weight (quit about 4 1/2 months ago).

You know, when I was in rehab a few years back, I actually put on a lot of water weight from retension-it came off though. Maybe you are retaining water?

Whatever it is, if you were a long time drunk, your body is all out of whack right now-it may go up and down weight wise-just take care of yourself. Even if you gain weight, believe me you will look so much better sober than drunk! "

" I'm not sure I have an explanation for that; but I do suggest you put your focus on recovering from alcohol. The weight thing will work iteslf out, don't let it be your reason for drinking again. "

" I didn't eat when I drank and as I drank all the time.....
I have to admit I porked up pretty good, especially over the holidays. When I first sobered up I was so stressed out and sick that I didn't gain weight, I actually lost it. I started putting on weight when I got moved into my own house.I don't walk as much anymore and one of my idiot buddies gave me 4 lbs of choclate that started a HUGE sugar bender. I'm working on losing it though, I'm too cheap to buy anymore pants. "

" When I got out of treatment,I weighed 225 pounds.I've been out a little over a year, and am down to 185,and in the best shape I've been in years.I didn't do anything to lose weight,it just happened.I'm much more active now, since I'm not drunk or hungover all the time.My beer belly is gone,my clothes that were too small fit again. It must be one of sobriety's side effects.I did gain a some weight at first, because my appetite returned and there wasn't much oppurtunity for exercise. " Glad youmentioned- cause Its been happenig to me too- and was hoping fo rht eopposite. it'll happen thogh and I dont thinkyou shoul dworry about it. Focus ont eh sobriety and if it means treating your self to a little something tha you would nt normally have (for me a cocoa cola- high calories), so be it- antyhing to keep you off the booze.

Worry about that- then the rest will fall into place- I'm sure of it:) keep up the good work! "

" I have no experience of this as I have other problems which affect my weight, but just some advice here!
Mike is right that your mind will desire alcohol as that is what alcohol mostly consists of. One way to deal with this is to ensure that your blood sugar stays at a consistent level. That means eating foods that burn slowly, such as oats etc (so porridge for breakfast is a good plan so long as you don't load it with sugar lol)
Check out Low GI recipes and advice, it is the best thing for keeping your blood sugar on an even keel, and is an excellent longer-term way to lose excess weight. "
