It gets better. Takes some years to get us to the point of wanting to stop. Can't expect to be better overnight. Suggestion... get involved. Participation makes a huge difference.

Hello Angel1105,
I too would suggest getting involved. Arrive early and talk to members; get telephone numbers; help out at the meetings – those are the things that helped me in the early days. What probably helped more than anything was that after arriving with no belief in AA, I soon realized that those sober people had what I wanted. I found out too that they kept what they had by giving it away. After that I never went to a meeting with thoughts of what I could get out of it but rather what I could contribute, however small and insignificant my contribution may have been. In that way I always left the meeting with a positive feeling. Acceptance is important too. It is not good enough to admit at a meeting that you’re an alcoholic and to then go away thinking that maybe you could drink again. Once you fully accept that there is a problem you can start looking at how it can be fixed.

Take the advice about getting involved! Of course it's a struggle but the sooner you get a sponsor the sooner you can recover! PM me if I can help at all. Lyn

Just keep moving forward one day at a time. It isn't easy but it is worth it. Definetly get involved, and look at changing your routines. The first time I stopped drinking, I still went to the bar all the time and just ordered pop. I thought I had things under control. I did not. Its better for the first while to remove ourselves from these situations. In time you will be okay to hang around drinkers, sometimes, but when you first quit, find sober friends, go to meetings, meet people that have sober time. Its really important you make your sobriety a lifestyle. Do the steps. It helps big time!

I am reading comments here and must agree with the idea to get more involved. I think you need to confide in a person one on one with this. Is there someone you have met at the meetings that seems approachable? Always remember that people enjoy being asked to help-it helps them too.

Its all down to expectations - how would you expect to be doing after one week? I would say that you have not had a drink for a week and are going to AA so rather than not doing very well you are actually doing pretty well. Take all the suggestions on board and it will certainly get easier.
