for the last few years or so I have been an emotional eater.... since the breakdown of my marriage nearly a year ago it's gotten much worse.. so alongside all the feelings about my marriage I now have to contend with being about 2 stone overweight

now I am 7 months sober... wondering if I am replacing one addiction with another? I know I need to 'sit' with my feelings.. and I have been doing that recently... but I worry about being overwhelmed by it all so take my 'relief' where I can.... so it's food and cigs.... much better than if booze was added into the equation

I am in therapy and will talk this over.... just wondered if anyone else felt/did the same?

" Hi rubyblue, I think we all do this to an extent. I've certainly had a history with filling gaps with whatever was easy to find and use. But I believe that the skills and knowledge we aquire fighting and beating one addiction make us stronger and smarter for the next battle.

I say try not and feel bad about this and give yourself a lot of credit for the path you're on. Have you every read Geneen Roth's books? She's a wonderful author and writes primarily about food addictions, but her ideas and compassion have been valuable to me for other problems too.

Bravo for 7 months, you're a winner! "

" Yes!! good for You! Keep talking things can change on the self care arena :)

Very common thing to do , but awareness is the key I've found and along with awareness comes again caring more about our physical being.

Not fixing or purging but change based on the reality of how it really effects us!! Us meaning me and what I've observed:)

" I do love sweets. Since I quit with the alcohol its been very hard to cut back on them. My first year of sobriety I focused only on that and cut myself slack and ate what I wanted. Recently I'm trying to cut back but mixed results. I love "comfort" foods, but I do try to exercise to at least stay pretty healthy. "

" When I see the a comfort eating session coming on I make a huge bowl of salted (maybe some curry and paprika) popcorn (no butter, if you cook it in oil, it's not dry). It's very satisfying, it's crunchy and I don't feel sick afterwards. If you do this in front of a movie or a fun magazine it's even better! "

" i have been sober for 1 month and am craving more sweets~~~ I love milk chocolate. Tonight I had a yummy pistachio muffin! The Starbucks cheese danishes are good too. Chardonnay has a lot of sugar too so I am wondering if my body is trying to replace that in some way lol... "

" 7 months sober - wow! Congratulations.

Sometimes I think we have access to so much food through grocery stores, restaurants and fast food that we just indulge. I love sweets, but different foods interest me, and I have to be careful because I have gained weight!

You are aware and that will eventually get you moving when you have a bit more to eat! Dealing with your marriage is more than difficult - please celebrate your achievements and ease up on worrying about the eating for now.

7 months is huge "

" "Any mental preoccupation can distract one from one's feelings"

Once I arrested the much bigger problem of Alcohol, I started to see how true this was in other areas of my life. Whatever it is, it's almost invincible - like a fairground Whack-a-mole. Beat the beast back with a mallet, and up he pops from a different hole. Some spiritual paths explain this in a different way, and perhaps on a deeper level. The trick is to try to tackle the root, while we steer clear of Alcohol.

Oh, and booze is loaded with sugar. "One of the many doctors who had the opportunity of reading this book in manuscript form told us that the use of sweets was often helpful, of course depending upon a doctor's advice. He thought all alcoholics should constantly have chocolate available for it's quick energy value at times of fatigue. He added that occasionally in the night a vague craving arose which would be satisfied by candy. Many of us have noticed a tendency to eat sweets and have found this practice beneficial." "

" Try and see it for what it is, a way to rid anxiety. I know all to well that switching addictions is all too easy. Yes, there are lesser evils-but our goal is to be free, right?

I would say track how you feel after you overeat. Perhaps write it down. I am constantly battling sugar addiction, and it really makes me feel horrible after. If I can remember this feeling vividly-it can curtail my sugar problem (only sometimes, I am not there yet).

We need to learn balance in all things-this is a journey I am on too. In the meantime, try and stay healthy-focus on eating healthy stuff. I try and eat fruit when I am craving, or granola, for example.

It is all a work in progress, be kind to yourself, and be gentle in your judgements. No one is perfect, it is all about working to become better. "
