Just curious, how many years did your sponsor have when you went through the program?

" A misconception in Aa is how long sober ur sponser has to be.if u read the big book,it said ebby took bill thru the steps when he was two months.try to find someone who u can relate to as that helped me. Good luck mate:) "

" i find that sponsors with more time to be better.

i have had 2 go out and drink on me, maybe that should tell me something.

i think i gravitate towards the ones "more like me" figuring all my shit out is a major task for sure, i have someone that has over 20 years now, and i didnt just bump into him, or he approached me. i have heard him speak, just, discussion groups, no leads, and he is the real deal. "

" In my book, it is the quality of sobriety, not the quantity of years, that matters to me. I looked for someone who had what I wanted. Good quality sobriety. "

" I got the sponsor that was just right for me. She had 4 years sobriety and it was solid. She had that serenity and presence that reflected that this was a woman of substance. I wanted what she had so did what she did. At about 8 yrs, I had a sponsor with 10 yrs. Amazing growth spurt for me during that time.

Ya know, I don't think it was mere happenstance that these women appeared in my life at the exact time that I needed them. My sponsor today has 32 yrs. My higher power is never late. "

" Like people have already said, it's about quality rather than quantity. Some people who have many years of sobriety are nuts but others are the 'real deal'.

Best not to boast about your sponsor when you have yet to stop drinking! "

" With all due respect ramblin I'm not sure the sponsorship youv'e had is the model I'd follow. I agree with Steve. There seems to be one thing that is required for sponsorship, a spiritual awakaning and the desire to pass that on. At least that's what the book says. If its not in the book I am cautious about taking it on as a practice, but that's just me.

My sponsor has 29 years. I didnt know what when I asked her to sponsor me. I just knew that I wanted what she had and believed her when she told me that if I did what she did, I could have what she has. So I have, for the most part;-) Done what she says that is, not have what she's got. But that's for me to aspire toward. "
