Do Recovering Alcoholics smoke Pot?

I have a son, 33, who is a recovering alcoholic. I would join "alanon" but I want to ask these questions of you who are recovering from this disease. I need your perspective.

My son is depressed too (sober 103 days). He tells me that smoking pot is what is holding him together - he also has social anxiety disorder. I just find this difficult to swallow. Isn't sobriety about not using substances to "medicate"??? My daughter has a couple of recovering alcoholic friends, she tells me they smoke pot too.

Can anyone in this community offer me any reality about this?

Thanks so much...

" We all have to hit bottom-where ever and when ever that may be. If someone quits drinking and then starts some other mind altering substance in order to cope with life, they likely haven't hit their bottom yet and will continue to do what they do until they hit their bottom with that substance.

I know a person who quit drinking due to going to jail, then got out and just smoked pot. He reasoned that it was the alcohol that caused him to end up in jail and had nothing to do with pot. He didn't want to go back to jail, so no more alcohol.

He ended up smoking pot for 9 years after that, up until everytime he smoked pot he would feel suicidal. He had to stop and started goping to AA and NA in order to find support for both his problems. He's been sober for about 2 years and loving every minute of his sobriety from all mind altering substances. "
