I NEED HELP with alcohol withdrawl

My boyfriend came to me tonight and told me he drinks too much and wants to stop. He says he does not like who he is without drinking. He is starting to get really irritable when not drinking and turns to drinking after his morning coffee. He says he is afraid to stop because he has heard about Delirium Tremens and is afraid he will experience severe withdrawl sympyoms.
He drinks beer mostly. Averages about 18-24 cans a day. When he doesn't drink beer he turns to rum. Not the "hard" stuff but the 40 proof grocery store rum. He can do a whole bottle or double bottle of the 40 proof rum. I have been with him for about 3 years and we both can't remember when the last time he went a whole day without drinking. MY QUESTION IS: CAN WE DETOX HIM WITHOUT MEDICAL ATTENTION? I WANT TO BE AS SUPPORTIVE AS I CAN BE..... I drink too much as well.....at least a bottle of wine a day. I want to do this right and together.....any advice? thank you Posted on 10/21/09, 11:10 pm |

Well of course I'm not a doctor nor medically sanctioned (LOL) but I have a friend who at this very moment is on the verge of seizures. He's had them before and therefore (from what I can gather) is more apt to have them again so this topic is on my mind.
Yes, I have heard that one can have seizures and delerium tremens from drinking mass quantities of beer. And it may not be wise for him to stop cold-turkey without seeing his doctor first to determine the danger of it. If he's in danger of the DTs or seizures the doctor may want to bring him down slowly with a different sedative like Librium or Valium. He maybe should see the doc, but to use that as an excuse to continue drinking is inexcusable......

Lotsa concern here lilscared-you both need to consult a doc about this. Do not sugar coat it-tell them exactly what you have been doing.
I am thinking you bf may need to go to a detox center if he drinks starting in the morning and a large amount. If you both are around to support eachother through detox-I tell you that may not be the best plan. It is no fun for most people, and I usually got a little bent out of shape for no reason, to say the least. Do what you need to do to quit. You need to take care of you, or you will not be around for your bf. Go to doc.

Absolutely no. He needs to detox and under supervison. Once ounce 80 proof whiskey is equivelant to a 12 oz can of beer in alcohol content also wine glass full of wine is approx the same. So don't play chemist.
There is no such thing as drinking if you an alcoholic. So if he slows up he will be back in no time. It will get worse. Get help..if he truly wants to stop. But be forewarned if he is alcoholic he can never drink again, or you have not seen anything yet.

Everyone's sensitivity to alcohol is very different. You might be able to quit a bottle of wine, drink gatorade and take vits for a few days and be fine. Him, I would certainly want to consult a doc. When in doubt you could both make an appointment with a doctor, sit down, say you intend to stop drinking and you want to do it safely. Seizures are something everyone wants to avoid, period. They can kill you. You are best served seeing a doctor. Many people can be detoxed at home without going to a rehab facility but that should be done under medical advice. It's a brave of you both to want to stop just make sure you have all the info you need from the right people to do this. You made a decision now just follow through safely. Then make sure you have support and counsel whatever you decide that should be for you.

my advise - stop drinking when you have day off o r better two - you/he will throw up all day, be scared that you will die, would not be able to follow sleep - drink as much water as you can - even if you will throw up each moment...after 18 hours you will start to feel better...i promise,,,

Everybody is different- it depends on your body chemistry, how long, and how much you drink. Why don't you seek out the help of a doctor to get through this? They've seen it all before and they're not going to judge.
How are your stomach cramps today LilSteps? I saw your post yesterday? It' s tough enough to get yourself sober but it's twice as hard to work on your boyfriend as well. Get some medical help, go to an AA meeting also tell us how you're doing today.

Talk to a dr. bad things can happen trying to detox yourself. It depends on how much and how long you have been drinking, you can have siezures that can be deadly. You can also call your local AA hotline.

I drank as much as your boyfriend does and I tried differnt ways to quit. I was successful detoxing on my own but i did use valium. I DON'T recommend it. I was stupid and could have died, probably should have a few times. The best experience I had was going to a hospital detox. I was definitely scared to death, but everyone at the hospital was great. When I arrived at the hospital I was in full blown withdrawl. They gave me librium and ativan which helped greatly.(again only under a dr supervision please) I didn't have insurance at the time so I went to a charity hospital and they charged based on income. I spent a day and a night and it only cost 500 dollars. It was worth every penny. Afterwards, they contacted me with information on programs and counselors. If you both have a problem I really recommend this. Good luck and call around you will be surprised at how nice everyone is. Scott
