Son Failing Math

My son has always been a math whiz, he has always tested very high and gotten good grades. This year his 7th grade math teacher is a dud and he is failing math.
I have a call into talk with her and I am going to request copies of her lesson plan a week in advance. (The teachers here already have to have this in place for substitute teachers.) I figure the best I can do is get her plans and go over them with my son in his book. I live in a very small town and this math teacher is a problem who is not going away. (30-year teacher who is entrenched.) All the other moms have had problems with her so I know it's not just my kid. Any other suggestions on how to deal? I refuse to let one bad teacher crush my sons love for math. Posted on 10/29/09, 10:10 am |

I think that what plans you have described sound great. Encourage him. Help him if he doesn't understand. I am in precalculus, and neither of my parents can help me, so I often have to ask classmates for help, but genrally I am one of the two people everyone turns to for help. Having parents who understand that its just not clicking, or that the teacher doesn't teach is definitely helpful. I hope I helped.

If several moms have this problem with the teacher, why don't you organize a study co-op where Monday nights you help the boys with their math, Tuesday night they go to Suzy's house, Wednesday they go to Jane's, etc. and then it doesn't stress one mom out too much. Also, being a single mom, it gives you an hour to yourself...

OK, here is my solution. I am going into my son's classroom every Monday to copy down the lesson plans for the week so my son and I can go over them every night. I will also stay in the classroom on that day to observe. I fell lucky that I have the time to do this every Monday...

Your son is the lucky one. He is very blessed to have you as his mother. I hope he knows how fortunate he is.
