I would be telling the 20 year old either he cleans up after his self or he moves out. The 16 year needs priveleges taken away until his room is cleaned. You should not have to live in a pig sty because they choose to I would just tell him how it is my way or the highway

My 20 yr old just did a 180 on his room. It use to be a pig sty. 3 weeks ago he cleaned it and put new carpet down and it looks good.
I almost had a heart attack! I'm still working with my younger D she's 11. But I can usually take something she loves away and that snaps her into shape.

So strange how two kids can be so different. The 16-year-old has a room from hell. What gets me is he doesn't seem to mind. I have him clean it once a week, deep clean twice a month, but within a day or two it's back to a sty (no offense to pigs, who are probably cleaner than he is! ). My 12-year-old, doesn't thrive in chaos and he knows it. Things get put away and everything has a place. Heck, he even dusts on occasion without me bugging him.
The rules I have in place are enough for me. We have bigger battles to fight. As long as the no food in the room rule (a big one) doesn't get broken and things are cleaned up once a week I'm good. He's NOT allowed to bring his mess into the rest of the house. Amazing how it seems to follow him, just like Pigpen in Charlie Brown.
