Toddler has recurrent vomiting

My 13mo son and I came down with a stomach bug Monday night. Gave him clear fluids, moved to watered down gatorade (nurse suggested it), jello and chicken broth Tuesday. He developed very watery diarrhea Tuesday. Kept pushing fluids. No dehydration. Wednesday seemed to feel fine but was still having some diarrhea, gave bread, saltines, cheerios and milk. Wednesday night he woke up at 1AM vomiting, lasting until about 4AM. Thursday same, clear fluids, seemed better on Friday, I took it slower with the solids. Gave him rice this time. Friday he stayed with his dad and he started vomiting again for most of the night. Saturday just fluids, seemed better. Introduced yogurt thinking it may be a problem with having lost too much bacteria and enzymes from his GI tract. Vomited most of Sunday afternoon. Going to take him to the doctor tomorrow AM, but until then anyone have any ideas?

" I would definitely take him to the doc, but in the mean time I would just give him fluids (pedialyte, gatorade, etc) and give his tummy a break from the foods. For whatever reason, it's too soon for him to eat as it seems he throws up any time you give him food.

He'll be okay with the fluids, dehydration is the big worry, but it sounds like you are totally on top of that.

Good luck... it's the worst when they have the stomach bugs, isn't it? "

" what kind of vomiting is it? if he is throwing up bile in projectile form you probably take him into the emergency room or get him into the doc right away. he could have an intestinal blackage of some kind and is not able to digest foods "

" Yes, it's time for a reevaluation. Although I have seen the intermittent vomiting last for a few days, its time you bring him in. Please give an update today.

Dr. J "

" Thanks for the replies. I'm about at my wits end.

He threw up again around 11PM Sunday night, a couple of hours after my post. So I called the pediatrician's on call nurse and also mentioned a lump that seemed very tender that he's had in the crease of his right leg for a few days. She was concerned it might be a strangulated hernia, and suggested we go to the ER. He threw up again there. They gave him Zofran and IV fluids (which, since he wasn't dehydrated, puffed him up like the sta-puff marshmallow man) and did an ultrasound of the lump, but not of his entire abdomen b/c his belly was soft and not distended. The lump is a lymph node about the size and shape of a kidney bean. I followed up with the pediatrician Monday, one in the practice but not his primary. She said that his stomach and bowels are probably inflamed and to keep doing what I've been doing; that there's nothing really to do for vomiting. She did want me to get a stool sample, but it has to be delivered fresh and he didn't go again until last night. The vomiting cycle continues. I gave him clear fluids and a couple of saltines on Monday; yesterday gave him cheerios and pears for breakfast (ate most of it), yogurt and chicken noodle soup for lunch (ate a few noodles and all of the yogurt...yo-baby), a few bites of applesauce in the afternoon then plain pasta and 1/2 of a mashed sweet potato for dinner (wasn't into the pasta but ate most of the sweet potato), gave him ~6oz of milk about an hour after each meal. Kept a cup of some sort of clear fluid available to him all day. He threw up once last night before bed and twice this morning. He's also been refluxing a lot today and very fussy. I'm worried because thats's what I do but also because he's losing weight and he's already a thin baby. Thanks again for the support. "

" I realize you were at the ED a couple nights back, but the fact that it is continuing, you definitely need to see your general pediatrician now...and make sure you discuss the entire week of symptoms now. Dr. J "

" Thanks, again, for the advice. Went to his regular pediatrician today (Wed). She said she thinks it's still the virus (norovirus has been making rounds here) and I should take it even slower putting him back on solids...more meals, smaller portions. And offer smaller amounts of fluids. I've been letting him have as much as he wants as often as he wants out of fear of dehydration. His stools are more substantial, but not normal yet. He is just so unhappy, it breaks my heart. And I hate to say it, but the crying is getting to me. And he wants to held all the time. I just wish I could do more to help him... "

" My daughter just went through the same exact thing. Vomitting and diarrhea for 5 days straight. Took her to the doctor, he told me the same thing. Its a nasty virus going around. All I can say is keep doing what you're doing. Watch for dehydration. Don't give solids until he stops vomitting. Chicken broth and pedialyte both good choices. After keeps those down, try Chicken and rice soup. My ped says rice is great for stopping vomitting and diarrhea. And just hold him and love him. Its a tough time for both of you! I feel for ya! "

" Just want to say that I hope your son is feeling better. You must be exhausted too! A lot of my friend's children must have had the same virus... they were dealing with vomit and diarrhea for 5-6 days too! Sounds like you're doing a great job at trying to keep him hydrated and comfortable. "

" He is much better, thanks. Last Wednesday (Feb 28) was the last puking episode. Ten days. Whew. Now he's cutting his molars. The fun continues.... No but really, he's awesome. He's just started walking and is too cute. You can see why they're called toddlers. "

" Over Christmas, my husband and I caught the that darn virus and it put us down for a week. I was SO LUCKY that my toddler didn't get it too, and I can't imagine how distressing it would be to take care of a little one that was going through what I went through. I wanted to say that I hope that your boy is on the mend and I wanted to say that you're doing a fantastic job for him. Hope you have a good week! Hugs, Julz :D "
