I am a new father to a beautiful little girl named Julia. Me and my wife both are a little old school in our thoughts and beliefs. In a world were every one including the doctors are trying to sell you something or make you fear something one can never be to careful or overly informed. We as parents are always skeptical unless a doctor tells us it is life or death.
We also as a couple remeber that we used to give birth on dirt, hay, rock, cave, floors for the better part of our human existence. You know what, we are all ok arent we???? Of course infant death, disease and disorder were more prevalent as well back then (not good for the individual but it was nature approved) .I am certainly greatful things have changed but I think some of the old ways have been lost and interupted by the fear our society puts on us a parents. Look out for this and that and germs, oh, bacteria, etc.... bullocks This all being said I was curious to hear some of your stories about jaundice. I would like to hear if your infant suffered from it in any way and also how it devloped over time and how it's symptoms decreased over time. If it was necessary to treat medically which route did your pediatrician recommend???? All information will be useful.. We are currently arguing with our pediatrician who wants to do phototerapy on our child who has a billirubin level of 12.8 at day 8. She is breast fed only and pooping nice yellow poops. this makes me believe that everything is going just as nature had idealized????? Your thoughts are appreciated... Thank you.....RRJ92307 Posted on 10/01/07, 04:10 pm |

And by the way, rrj92307, although we all have our own opinions and we can all agree to disagree, you were unnecesarily abusive toward the other members of our site and I feel like you should just not ask for advice anymore. We all come here for a safe place to share our thoughts and our hopes and our troubles and to get advice. I really wanted to remain neutral to this whole discussion because I saw good points to both sides, however, you did not need to be so rude and abusive. If you ask for advice, you can either take what you get, or leave what you get. I get advice everyday I don't even ask for, and I say "thanks" and then I use it or forget it. Try that sometime.

Hi greyash :) Thanks for the post. I did just want to point out that strengthening and supporting was exactly what I was trying to do. A topic was posted requesting information and stories. I shared my story, which for me was a very painful and difficult time, and offered information. I am always open to everyone's opinions and never chastise someone for their beliefs or opinions. I realize that everyone has their own way of doing things and versatility is what keeps things interesting. I was only trying to help where help was requested. My apologies if anything I said caused controversy, but frankly I was a little ticked off at the exchange and I reacted, I feel, as most people would. I'm sorry if that's made me appear to be a 7th grader as it was not my intention. It's been my experience that you may receive advice from someone one day that seems not at all useful and then the very next receive life-saving information from the very same person, so I certainly don't advocate burning bridges.

Greyash,
I disagree with you and your opinion that I sound akin to a seventh grade girl (Is that strengthening and supportive?) But thank you for your input. I think I posed my points in a non-offensive manner. Yes, we come here for strength and support, but I am not going to allow someone to essentially tell me that certain concepts 'are over my head' when indeed, I did everything in my power to convey my response in a respectful and informational manner. He had made false, broad, and kind of insulting generalizations on some perspectives. I didn't realize that correcting someone might be dubbed non-supportive. His decision to vaccinate, not vaccinate, create his own vaccinations, or whatnot is and was his own decision. My later 'throw-my-hands-up-in-exasperation' response was in direct reply to my giving a personal story and information that he originally asked for (direct quote from original poster "Your thoughts are appreciated..." Apparently, our thoughts are only appreciated when in complete agreement with his opinions...) and then being told by him that I was essentially daft and don't get 'it'. There was no name-calling or any other 'seventh grade girl' actions and he had an opportunity to chime in at any moment and clarify what he meant by information being 'clearly over my (and others) heads. I don't want to appear argumentative, as I wanted to let the situation drop, but I don't think it was necessary to label anyone's responses that of a seventh grader and that the 'talking' should cease. I hope all is well with you, in any event. *deep breath* Dancermom, Yes, that is her...all cheeks and very edible. I hope your little one is doing alright. (and your older one too, of course!) Cheers.

Hi DLR77 :)
Thank you for asking. In the greater scheme of things, they are both doing well. Little d/s is still having more allergy testing done and still keeps loosing weight. Medications are not working very well. Many on D.S. have suggested getting tested for Candida and his ped agrees, so we'll be having bloodwork next week. Also, ped says rt.leg is very bowed and his gate is unstable, preventing him from being able to crawl and walk well at the moment, so in addition to the allergist, gastroenterologist and dermatologist, we now add orthopaedist to the list of specialist for our 1 YEAR OLD! Anyway, Ellorie is adorable....her cheeks look like they were separated at birth from Evan's :)

As a side note, I think I know from where this might have come about. My blatant misuse of grammar and mis-abbreviation on my response post to the original poster is quite enough to set anyone thinking that I haven't any mental capacity. 'You're' instead of 'your'? APA instead of AAP? He probably thought I was talking about The Austrian Pirates Association or The American Poolplayers Association instead of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was right to think it all was over my head. (And others!)
Bad grammar and mis-abbreviation brings about chaos and destruction every time. Ask Socrates. He's dead, though. I sincerely apologize. (Really, I just can't let my typo mistakes go. I can't.) I'm going to get yelled at now, aren't I?

Ok every one I really stirred up a nest here. I will apologize forth right for anything that I may have said to offend any one.
I did in the beginning want feedback. I asked and I recieved, thank you. The topic and the way it progressed became very one sided. It also seemed that everyone that was repliying followed the doctors recommendations to a T. I ask you this why are our children getting Billi blankets, while we when were children were sent home???. Because they didnt know about how to treat it! Therefore nature ran it's course and we are fine arent we???? They have a treatmnet now so they have to sell it. ( WE REFUSED TO TREAT OUR DAUGHTER AND GAVE HER PLENTY OF MAMAS MILK AND DIFUSED SUN LIGHT AND GUESS WHAT AGAINST THEIR RECOMMNEDATION SHES IS PERFECT) It jaundice is naturally occuring, are our doctors so smart as to deny a basic inherent birth trait of all mankind????? Also The information that I posted in regards to the potential of some doctors being blinded by their greed and following the APA gudlines exctly without ever researching other potentials is true. Further more the small percentage of doctors who actuallly want to help people, when they go to school they accept what the school teaches blindly. What would another school teach??? Is this information correct or is it in accordance with keeping the medicines coming and selling??? I also apologize if this fits the criteria of your doctors?? Ok this last little tid bit of information is not to create tension it is an insight that perhaps if viewed in an open minded fashion will change our current state. We learn what they want us to learn! They tell us what they want to tell us. We just like good obedient tax paying citizens do as they wish because we know no different. If you were born in a differnt country you would be speaking another language but still following their rules and their education programs. All that I have learned, and I am certainly well educated, becomes questionable when I start to understand more the complexities of government. They bascially have people that can predict job markets and the needs of job markets. They can approximately assess how many doctors will be needed by 2010, 20, 30. They know this for everyone from every different backround. And as Government is a buisness, whats better for buisness then dumb consumers that will pay 7$ for a hot dog at a baseball game. Or $3.00 a gallon for gas that costs our government .37 cents, oh and dont forget the profit they make. We are so consumed with our own lives thatt we do not have time to question or research. We follow blindly like good little consumers. They are playing us as fools. We trust everything they set up for us to much. We rely on it as a foundation. Why do you think we battle with eachother???? Because others have different foundations! Governments do not like that. Truth often makes one uncomfortable. The bed rock breaks. It can also hurt feelings and arouse anger. This is not my point here. I also can not claim to know everything or for that matter that I am even right. I have put the pieces together as educated as humanly possible. Think for yourself, question everything. Also if you would please stop buying 7$ hotdogs at sporting events in fact ban the arena food period.. The prices will drop dramatically trust me... This bann holds true for many things. Also demand your doctor inform themselves of the top healthcare providersin the Worlds protocol not our measly number 13 ranked system.....Thats right folks 13.. Amonst first world nations... France and Italy #1 and #2 They immunize only half of what we do and at different times.....Many others follow their recommendations based on the research . We the people do have a voice....They only have pulled us apart so we cannot unite.....

How exactly did we go from health care to hot dogs? I see the connection. Eat too many hot dogs, health care is a necessity. Someone should tell the participants in those hot dog eating contests.
I agree with you on one thing...seven dollars for a hot dog is outrageous. I opt to smuggle my own hot dogs in and I'm certainly not going to tell you how. Again, you are making unfounded claims. How do you KNOW it costs the government $.37 for a gallon of gasoline. If you had a reliable source to back up this claim (and all other of your claims) i would be more accepting of your viewpoints. I can type in capital letters too. (How 7th grade...) HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WEREN'T EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT YOUR DAUGHTER DIDN'T DEVELOP ANY COMPLICATIONS?? I am glad that she didn't, but one thing I learned in our brief stint in the NICU, is that nature and 'mama's milk' is certainly not the cure-all you think it is. Could you tell that to the woman who was in tears because her little boy had to undergo multiple heart surgeries at only a few weeks old? Or to the parents whose twins were born prematurely, weighing 1 and 1.5 pounds respectively? I'd be curious to hear their responses. I hope your family remains in excellent health.

Hi There :) I don't want to belabor this issue, as I know we've been "around the world and back" already. However, I did discover some very interesting news this past week and I wanted to share it here.
About two weeks ago, I discovered a brown line down the center of one of d/s's teeth, so I took him to our pediatric dentist for a check-up. The dentist said that it was caused by elevated bilirubin levels which occur during severe cases of jaundice. The first place that early trauma leaves a footprint is on the teeth. It turns out it is early decay and we will now have to take him to the dentist every 4-6 months to make sure the tooth isn't softening or it can cause issues with the permanent tooth. We had d/s on a biliblanket to help reduce bilirubin levels throughout our ordeal and this still occured, so I felt it was necessary to share this in case any new parents are reviewing this topic. Anyway, just FYI about what I discovered :)

My little girl had jaundice and all I did was take her out in the sun and within a week it was just about all gone. When I was born I had jaundice too. I'm not a doctor but I asked my doctor about it .. its just a yellowing of the skin and in the whites of their eyes and is not in anyway painful for them, and the best way to get rid of it is to have them out in the sun or under a heating lamp.

No jaundice is NOT painful for the child, but if the bilirubin level goes too high and stays that way too long, it can cause brain damage. So you have to be careful with it. Hugs, Fern
