I am a new father to a beautiful little girl named Julia. Me and my wife both are a little old school in our thoughts and beliefs. In a world were every one including the doctors are trying to sell you something or make you fear something one can never be to careful or overly informed. We as parents are always skeptical unless a doctor tells us it is life or death.
We also as a couple remeber that we used to give birth on dirt, hay, rock, cave, floors for the better part of our human existence. You know what, we are all ok arent we???? Of course infant death, disease and disorder were more prevalent as well back then (not good for the individual but it was nature approved) .I am certainly greatful things have changed but I think some of the old ways have been lost and interupted by the fear our society puts on us a parents. Look out for this and that and germs, oh, bacteria, etc.... bullocks This all being said I was curious to hear some of your stories about jaundice. I would like to hear if your infant suffered from it in any way and also how it devloped over time and how it's symptoms decreased over time. If it was necessary to treat medically which route did your pediatrician recommend???? All information will be useful.. We are currently arguing with our pediatrician who wants to do phototerapy on our child who has a billirubin level of 12.8 at day 8. She is breast fed only and pooping nice yellow poops. this makes me believe that everything is going just as nature had idealized????? Your thoughts are appreciated... Thank you.....RRJ92307 Posted on 10/01/07, 04:10 pm |

Star flower and others... Who says they have to list all the ingredients...Keep researching you'll find the answer just as I... We are taught to trust these people...When I say these people I mean the government. The FDA, is a crok, look how many lawsuits have been formed and won on cases filed against the medical companies that make the drug....Funny how the FDA the one who approved it for the public never gets sued....
I do not fault the doctors except for there lack of knowledge in other case and clinical studies. Most docs really want to help but there are those who make a very nice living prescibing pills and drug treatments and benifiting very nicely from the kickbacks the drug companies give for choosing to write their scrips as opposed to another companies meds or treatment that may be better. I say this to inform every one and maybe help. Sure not every one is this crooked but fact remains fact that the FDA can list anything they want to list.. VEry often to protect their butts they do not.. I have never read Jenny Mccarthy or payed much attention to her at all. But her statement as I have learned myself first hand is a 1000% correct.......

RRJ92307,
Unfortunately, I remember the MTV show in the early / mid 90s called "Singled Out'" and have a hard time treating anything Jenny McCarthy has to say with any sort of credibility...at all. That said, I am firstly glad to hear that your daughter is indeed better. Secondly, I caution you in making broad and sweeping generalizations...while I understand you're intent is to inform and possibly help, there are those out there that might read your post and decide wholeheartedly NOT to immunize their children because they think they'll be inoculating them with dead babies. While, of course, it's a parent's choice, whether or not to immunize, I agree with Starflower, this generation of the developed world has yet to see any of the ramifications of what the diseases of the past had reaped upon society. I am quite sure, that people in Southern Africa, parts of Thailand, and parts of Latin America and other such places would be quite pleased with their state of life if they had ready access to the vaccinations that we have. And while it's easy to say, "I'm not vaccinating my child because I don't believe it's necessary; It's just another control tactic by the government."...Those who say that live in a place where these such diseases have been eradicated....by the use of immunizations. Were everyone to deny inoculation, I am guessing that these diseases might make a very unwelcome comeback. We're in a comfort zone...it's very easy to make judgment calls when there is seemingly little risk. I don't know how true this fetal white blood cell thing is in regard to the vaccination themselves, but if it is indeed true, so what? Do you really think that the use of fetal tissue or cells from an abortion is going to snowball into more people having abortions? "Hmmm..not enough flu shots out there, I think I'll have an abortion..." I am also quite certain, that if a woman is on the cusp about having an abortion, the idea that the tissue from the aborted fetus used for the 'greater good' is going to be the factor that sends her running to the clinic. That's like saying, "I think I'll get into a fatal car accident today so I can donate my organs..." Why wouldn't it be okay to use an organism to it's fullest potential when otherwise it would end up in the trash bin? And please don't say that it advocates abortion. Abortion existed and will continue to exist, despite legal sanction, as long as women have the ability to become pregnant. A quick note about sources...I applaud your efforts in advocating parents and the general community to be more involved and informed about their health care...This is very important. But to say that pediatricians don't know what they are doing and they are blindly following the APA is rather insulting. I am sure, as with the APA (which is made up of doctors, not circus clowns) most pediatricians and doctors in general are constantly researching and reading and trying to HELP the community, as opposed to trying to get as much money for prescribing as much medication as they can. Just 'googling' a buzz word into the web will get you all sorts of results, but you have to make sure where you are getting these 'statistics' and claims is a reputable, scholarly source. For example, if you are looking for factual statistics on the war in Iraq, and are getting your information from a site sponsored by an anti-war organization (details on sources of sites are usually at the bottom in small print) then your facts are going to be skewed and biased and probably misinformed. You want to make your claims on an even kilter. For me, I like to err on the side of caution. As said, my daughter ended up in the NICU with a high bilirubin count for 6 days. Would I have rather taken her home? Yes. But in taking her home I would have run the risk that the bilirubin levels would continue to rise and that she would end up in an even worse state than when she started. The percentage in which the bilirubin is rising needs to be taken into account as well as what the numbers are, methinks. Her numbers were low and stayed rather low because she was whisked away so quickly...to play on the side of caution. If I had taken her home, I am quite sure, I would have been back within a few days or less in a much worse situation than what had presented itself. Now, if they would have said that they needed to take her in and place a straw in her mouth and pump air into it to see if Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' would play from her bum as a remedy, than I'd be quite skeptical. But the bililights were nothing out of the ordinary and she came home a happy, healthy baby. I can't say that might have happened if I would have declined treatment...I guess I'll never know. And I'm glad. So all this and my digressions said, I am not a doctor, I don't even play one on TV. I often don't even use antibacterial soap. I am a mom trying to make the best decisions regarding her children, as I am sure you are. Skepticism is a wonderful thing, but if used too much and presented wrongly, it could easily backfire. And in the case of health, it's best to be informed with the correct information to make an unbiased and absolute BEST decision in any particular case. Now, who wants cookies?

rrj92307, You obviously misunderstood me! I don't like Jenny McCarthy and I know she is not qualified to go around preaching whether or not parents should give their kids immunizations, what causes and treats autism, or what kinds of things are in vaccines. She is simply a celebrity who has a son who she says had autism that she *cured* by killing *candida* and taking caesin and gluten out of his diet. BTW none of her so called treatments are proven to treat autism and they certainly don't *cure* it.
I think most people in this country are way too willing to listen to a celebrity instead of a medical professional when they need medical facts. I am not sure what you meant about the American Academy of Pediatrics, but I would like to clear up some falacies that you seem to believe. The AAP is a group of well established, well educated doctors who make recommendations to other doctors who treat children under the age of 18. They are not paid by any lobby organization, drug company or anyone else to make thier recommendations. They base their recommendations on medical research and medical facts so that their is a set of guidelines for parents and doctors to follow. A prime example is the vaccination schedule and the checkup schedule. Again, these are recommendations base on experience, but as parents we are not forced to follow it. But the AAP doesn't get anything in return for the service they provide to parent, their children and the doctors that treat them.

Clearly this is way over the heads of some... I apologize if I have offended anyone by the truths I have offered.. They are truths though and if ones eyes are open and in a state of open mindedness it will be seen by the masses.. This is clearly what they do not want. They want us to believe their every word and they want us to buy all that they recommend....Fact be fact, this mentality trancends into our every move in life....If it wasnt socially accepted to wear the clothes we do would we wear them.. No, see they even subliminaly tell us what to wear......
Call me a rebel but I have seen the light.....

Wow.
Clearly. Your highly informed and in-depth research transcend anything I could possibly wrap my little brain around. Now, if you'll pardon me, I am going to extricate myself from this topic and go fly off in my U.F.O.

They sent us home from the hospital and I didn't have to do NICU...we just had to go to the hospital three times a day to have blood drawn....yeah, this was the start of his very hard little life thus far. I forget that it's been an uphill battle with his health from day 1 & still climbing :(

Wow,my comment above seems a little out of place...I was still on page 1 of this whole discussion & missed all of the other stuff.....That being said, don't even get me started on NOT immunizing children. True, it is a parents choice, however, where in the world would we be right now without vaccines like Polio, Tetanus, Diptheria, Rubella, etc., etc., etc. I suppose we'd still have unecessary deaths of children from diseases that are now easily preventable and very nearly extinct. I don't blindly follow our doctors without using my instincts and intuition as a parent, however, I am not a doctor. I have to put some amount of trust in those in charge of my childrens health, just like I put my trust in teachers at school...not blindly but with some faith that they are doing the job they are trained to do. Again, this is just my personal opinion about my personal feeling.

What struck me as curious about this whole discussion was the fact that he's the one who posted, asking for stories and he said that all information would be helpful & then when he got information and stories....well, you were there. INTERESTING!!!

What happened to strengthening and supporting each other? you two sound like a bunch of 7th grade girls. Everyone has their own oppinion, everyone has to find their own way in this crazy world. What works for some parents and families does not work for others. I agree that we don't have all the info on what will happen in the future as a result of all our drug use and the chemicals we put in our bodies, also that our American FDa and other countries drug approvals are very different. I also know many parents who think that things like immunizations caused problems in their children. On the other hand, we no longer suffer from small pox, leprosy, the bubonic plague and many many other diseases. I would have been dead long ago if it weren't for the amazing things doctors are able to do. On the other hand, we are totally overpopulated and are ruining the earth. SEE? there are many different opinions just in my head alone. Can't we just agree to disagree and stop harassing each other? I think you two should just stop talking.
