Christmas and the Recession..Babys first Christmas

I have a question about Christmas and the Recession. How many of you are cutting back on a lot of gift giving? I have to be honest this is my baby's first Christmas and we have already spent almost 600 dollars on her and we have about 350 more to go for other people. I was just thinking I am pretty crazy aren't I. my husband runs a gas station and I am a SAHM. I just want it to be sooooo special for her. She'll be 8 months next month and I am so excited for Christmas day. We are going to my parents house, her Nana and Pop Pops. And typically my mom makes out like a bandit but I think its going to my baby 3 days to open all her gifts between my hubby and I and the rest of her family. If you dont mind me be nosy how much did you spend on your babies first Christmas? Thanks for your advice!

I have no idea how much we spent on Beckham for his 1st Christmas. We did make sure he had a lot of present under the tree Christmas morning though. He was only 3 months old at the time. Our daughter is 18 and she is the expensive one. We end up spending about $4000 to $5000 on her for Christmas. We are cutting back this year--not on our kids but with our family. Our finances haven't changed but I just think things are getting crazy buying presents for everyone in our family. Christmas should be for the kids!!!! I do not think you are crazy at all. Wanting to make Christmas special for your daughter is not crazy at all. Did you ever think of starting some special traditions with her? My daughter does not remember what she got for her 1st Christmas but we are still doing things during the holidays just because "it's a tradition" Like every Christmas we bake cookies with my mom--Paige is 18 and in college and is bugging us about when we are going to start making cookies--because it's tradition. While I am all for spending money on my kids (both of my kids are very spoiled) I think the special things are really what the kids will remember not the presents. Good luck and I hope you enjoy this Christmas season!!!

Because it's her first Christmas and she will be so young (just shy of 8 months), we are going rather low-key for this Christmas. Probably about $100 from my partner and I -- hard to speak for my mom, she may go a bit nuts! I'd rather take it easy now and be able to spend more later when she remembers it. But we always tend to be pretty conservative on spending at Christmas -- the most I've ever spent on my partner is probably $500.

WOW! We really want our dd to enjoy christmas and opening gifts but I dont think we will go over $200 for her! She will be 11 months, and tho it would be wonderful to spend more we just dont have it in our budget! But she wont be missing out! We have a very large family on my side and on dh's side so she will get plenty of presents!
I would rather our dd love the christmas time of year for the meaning rather then gifts, but gifts are nice too!

I'm thinking 200-300 and our son will be 11 months. We have never done huge Christmas' but there are some big things we'd like to get him. I'm looking forward to putting my tree up and maybe some pretty lights!

I feel like a bit of a miser!
My son will be 7 months at Christmas and I don't think he needs lots of pressies. We only have a one bedroom flat and not a lot of space to store toys. He won't remember it anyway and from my experience of other kids, they usually get more fun out of the wrapping paper than the expensive toys! I reckon he'll get most things from his grandparents - we'll be visiting there at Christmas but I'll probably get a few little things - £20-£30 tops! We're not really materialistic I guess.

I think we will my son only one gift ($50-80)just to have something under the tree. He will be 11 months old and has already a lot of toys, 2 grandmas crazy about him and a large extented family who will not forget about him...!
I do not believe spoiling children at Xmas, it is not the meaning of it...and, my son is spoilled every day, anyway!

my husbnd is laid off and I am a full time student, so its going to be tough for us, but I am still going to go overboard. Its my sons first christmas, I have to! Plus his birthday is 2 weeks later, and of course I will go too far with that too. We are not going to give gifts to anyone else in the family this year except for the kids, we are just going to focus on them.

My son will just be 14 weeks old. He will have no idea at all. I will have presents under the tree for pictures..but I will not be spending a lot of money on him. There is no point. Plus I know he will be getting plenty from both of our families...but that doesnt matter. He doesnt need anything...You could even just wrap a few things you already own if things are really tight. Put the money towards doing something as a family!!!

my son will only be 6 months old - I have bough him some cloth books for about $10 TOTAL - I don't really plan on getting him much more than that !! our WHOLE budget for the family is only about $500 TOTAL. I know that my sister will buy him some things, but really we aren't giving him much. I told my mother that he is asking Santa for DIAPERS That is what he REALLY needs!!
