Three Solid Foods Questions

(sorry in advance if this is posted somewhere else, I don't have the time or energy to go hunting)
Background -- My daughter is 6 months old, she's been eating solids since a little over 4 months old. So far she's had oatmeal cereal, pears, peaches, applesauce, peas, carrots and squash -- #1 -- Has anyone had a baby who has had trouble digesting butternut squash? Last week I started her on squash and after a few days she had some big tummyaches going on and was pooping a lot less. I watched for other signs of allergy, and there weren't any, but when I stopped feeding the squash and tried pears she normalized again. I was surprised that she had trouble with the squash. I'm wondering if the combination of squash and oatmeal cereal was too fibrous -- I always start her on a food mixed with her oatmeal so it's a familiar texture. #2 -- I was on www.wholesomebabyfood.com and noticed that they say you can give a 6-8 month old baby yogurt. Is this true? I guess I assumed since you couldn't feed milk until after 1 year old that applied to all dairy... are there different guidelines for yogurt and cheese? #3 -- When do you start feeding more than once a day? She currently just eats a lunch of 2 tablespoons of oatmeal cereal and 2 tablespoons of whatever fruit/veg we're on. Thank you! Posted on 11/05/09, 09:11 am |

1. I'd ask your doc it may just be a little too fibrous as you say.
2.Yes you can begin to use milk in cooking at 6 months. little stars yoghurts are designed for weaning so i started with them but yes yoghurt is ok at 6 months. i dont think it differs for cheese just obviously dont give soft cheeses. 3. As for how many meals a day well its up to you adn basically depends on your babies appetite. We did it like this (harriet was 5 months when we started. Week 1 - 1 Ice cube at lunch Week 2 - 2 Ice cubes at lunch Week 3 - 1 tablespoon cereal at breakfast, 2 Ice cubes at lunch. Week 4 - 2 tablespoons cereal at breakfast, 2 Ice cubes at lunch. Week 5 - 2 tablespoons cereal at breakfast, 3 Ice cubes at lunch. Week 6 - 2 tbl spns cereal Brek. 3 Cubes Lunch, 2 Cubes Dinner. Week 7 - 2 tbl spns cereal Brek. 3 Cubes Lunch, 3 Cubes Dinner. We then swapped to a bigger freezing pot than ice cubes which was probably equivelant to 5 cubes and she had one of those at each meal and cereal at breakfast, obviously with her milk in between. She now eats eveything and anything at meal times with us (now 11 months) and has a bottle morning and night. We just figured that slowly incresing would be easy on her tummy. It worked well and we never had any bouts of constipation during weaning. One thing i will say is we didnt change texture until about 7 months but after that she got fantastic at chewing and now eats just chopeed up food not blended at all. I hope that helps and her tummy feels better soon. x

i tried starting Brayden on solids around 3 months on the beginner foods. he has a sensitive stomach so it took until he was 5 months until he was able to eat the solids. he was getting his cereal at 2 months because he had a hard time digesting and keeping just formula down.
hes 10 months now and gets cereal 2X a day and veggies and fruit 2X a day. he gets cereal for breakfast and before he goes to bed and fruit and veggies for lunch and dinner. i found that if brayden got the fruit before the veggies, he would always puke whatever hes been given. he needs the veggies first. he didnt like peaches, squash and veggies with turkey at first, but i waited and tried again. the only thing he wont he is the peaches still. i have brayden still on the beginner and 6 month baby jars. i have tried him on the more textured still for 8 months, but he can not handle the tomatoe based stuff. he pukes it up right away. even when i was pregnant if i had tomatoe based foods i would get major heartburn right away.

my son is 10 months old, and has been eating yogurt once a day for at least 3 months. We use Minigo, its for kids and he absolutely loves it. Cheese is fine too, as someone else mentioned just dont give the soft cheeses.
And as for the two feedings a day... well when my son was 6 or 7 months old, I believe that is when we started giving him lunch as well as dinner. Ill tell you what he eats (same as at 7 months) , but he is a big boy and probably eats a bit more than most babies his age: 9oz bottle for breakfast 9oz bottle mid morning 1/3 - 1/2 of a big jar of casserole type food, like Chicken Paella, or veggie and beef etc plus 1 yogurt for lunch 9oz bottle mid afternoon 1/3 - 1/2 of big jar of casserole type food, plus half a jar of fruit, plus 1 9oz bottle for dinner 9oz bottle before bed, and sometimes cereal with fruit mixed in. So just let your daugter guide you on how much you should feed her. try giving her a little veg or fruit or whatever at dinner too, and work up to the casserole types if she likes it.
