Weight loss with breastfeeding

Just wondering how many of you have lost alot of weight while breastfeeding...? My son is 6 months old, and plan to breastfeed til he's a year. I've lost all my weight plus more. i'm actually in one or two sizes smaller than i was before i even got pregnant, and almost need all new clothes. so it's been amazing weight loss for me! but...i'm just wondering when i'm gonna stop losing and just stay at a steady weight...i know everyone is so different, but what are all of your insights on breastfeeding and weight loss? oh, and also, when you stopped breastfeeding, did you gain weight back??!! i'm incredibly busy and it's hard to find workout time, and i sort of watch what i eat. so im afraid that once i stop in 6 months, i'll gain alot of weight, bc im not actually "trying" to lose at this time. it just sort of does it on its own, and i know i won't b that lucky forever! hehe
thanks:)) Posted on 10/30/09, 11:10 pm |

For some people weight loss is great but if you are loosing too fast while you are nursing I would be careful. You dont' want to be unknowingly starving your body or making your body use nutrients from your body that YOU need for yourself as well. You could even be drawing from your muscles and other things that can be not good for you. I am underweight and have a hard time keeping weight on and my son is 8.5 months and I am still nursing. I have to really be careful that I eat enough so I DON"T loose more weight.
When you stop nursing if you cut down your calories by 500 or so (which is what you should be adding to support your nursing now) you shouldn't gain much weight and if you do it will level off as your body adjusts. Keep in mind that babies keep you lifting and exercising and not sleeping and snacking as much (cause it's not as easy to find the time too) and as that baby gets less demanding you may gain weight from those reasons as well.

Thanks for your comment lilpeep! you know i didn't realize some of these things until u mentioned them. i know for sure, on some days i don't eat enough. for 2 or 3 months after he was born it was hard for me to eat. i had to force myself. and i know on alot of days im not getting those extra cals that im supposed to have. so thanks for that insight! and i also agree with the physical demands, and how they may lessen with babies age. i guess i'll be counting my cals after he's not breastfed any longer. i'd hate to gain that weight back! :)

I am also thinner than before I got pregnant due to breastfeeding. It is great. I am by no means underweight and am looking foward to buying all new clothes sometime in the near future. My sister gave me a pair of jeans when i was 8 months pregnant. I held them up and thought "i am never going to be able to fit in those" well my daughter is 4 months old and the jeans are too big. horray for breastfeeding!

I thought I would lose the weight easier since I am working out and watching what I eat, but I am at a stand still. I lost weight when I was done BF with my daughter, and I lost weight with my son almost back to what I was before I had him but I want to lose the weight I was before our first. he is 6 months too and I hope in 6 months I can continue to lose the weight I know when I am done it will be harder to lose it.
so eat right and you will be fine.
