I'm trying not to freak(first time mom style) but my husband is already telling me to go to doctor..Anyway, my 5.5month old started a cough, sounds like it's her in her chest a little mucas sound to it..it's not constant and I just don't want her to get worse. What should I do? How should I help her? Thanks

" i would take your little girl to the doctors just to ensure that her cough isnt pnuemonia. her should should be able to listen to her lungs to ensure that she is okay.

i have a cool air mister in my sons room for when hes not feeling well to help him breathe at night. i also got him some vicks vapourizer pads that works like a glade plug in to help as well. maybe try some chicken broth to see if that helps "

" Thanks for the advice. I may wait on the doc a few days. My SIL is a ped. nurse, she just called and didn't think it was an issue and it probably isn't in the lungs just throat...we'll see. I will def. go get the Vicks things to plug in though and we use a cool air humidifier already...I'm not sure about the broth..she's only 5.5 months "

" What kind of heat do you have in your house? Could definitely be related to the air being too dry. Humidifiers are awesome! But if it doesn't seem to get better in a few days I would take her to the doctor, just to be sure. "

" I agree to wait to go to the doctor. You should be able to tell if it's in the lungs - you'll hear lots of rattling, probably wheezing, some difficulty breathing, etc. If it gets worse and you notice ANY difficulty breathing, then definitely bring her in. Otherwise, it's likely a cold with a little mucous...babies have a much more difficult time clearing it from their throats! "

" My 5 month old daughter has this going on right now. She sounds horrible and it rattles in her chest and she coughs and coughs until she ends up throwing up trying to get the stuff up. I've taken her to the Dr. twice and her lungs have been clear both times but she did have an ear infection but I could tell because she was tugging on her ear. We are going on the 3rd week of this. They recommend a cold mist humidifier and watch her chest and when her breathing changes and she is laboring to take a breath then you have something to worry about, granted I worry every single day. We haven't slept good for 3 wks every time she coughs I get and check on her because she starts gagging. I hate that they have to be sick "
