Recognizing that the impact that ADD has on those with ADD, their families and spouses, Drs. Hallowell and Ratey spell out a specific 5-step plan for targeting strengths, promoting talents, and creating a pathway to a joyful and productive life. This method is unique – the product of many years of research, testing and invaluable experience.
Through their patients’ vivid stories (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes – from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to daydreaming - and the transformational impact of precise diagnosis and treatment. |

I like that you said precise diagnosis and treatment. My son, now 20 was diagnosised at 12 with ADD and immediately put on meds. I stopped the meds after two weeks because they changed him. We learned other ways to manage it. Thank God. I believe that so many kids diagnosised with ADD may actually have other conditions. I hate that they all get lumped together into one basket called ADD when they are so many different conditions of ADD. I hope this study works.

I do hope they find other ways to treat these kids that suffer from ADD and ADHD.. When I was growing up (not so long ago) those terms weren't even around. Teachers and parents had to learn to discipline their children and make them realize the consequences of their actions. These kids aren't suffering from a learning curve or being 15 with the mindset of a 4 year old.. So parents and teachers need to learn how to discipline these kids and teach these kids. I'm not a pill popper and don't think kids should be either. It's just my opinion, but I think these terms are just a label that doctors and therapists got together and decided since they didn't really know what "it" was (it being the behavior) they would just call it ADD and ADHD and prescribe meds that cause zombie like side affects. That's just my opinion... but history shows that this wasn't a problem in the past to the extent it is now.. Just my opinion.. For any parents that have kids that are "ADD" or "ADHD" I would hope they seek out several opinions before settling on that diagnosis. Most behavioral or emotional issues can be resolved with proper teaching and discipline.

My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in 1st grade and put on meds. I didn't keep her on them long because they gave her other problems (sleeplessness, extreme weightloss, etc.) plus they made her too different. I preferred to use behavioral modifications which worked at home but I think most teachers aren't equipped to deal with children with ADD or ADHD. Perhaps the young ones fresh out of college may have had some teachings but in my experience with my daughter who had mostly older teachers, they were ill-equipped.
