hello lovely addisonians.
i have just this week been declared hypo thyroid - which i had wondered about for a long time. i think that my former doctor missed it, but anyway... do any of you deal with this *and* addison's? i have just started a low dose of synthroid (.25), and i'm PRAYING that this will help me with some energy and metabolism. have you lost weight on the synthroid? felt an energy difference? also, do you have to take your pill in the morning, with no food? i'm confused by the prescription wording, and haven't talked to my doctor yet ... (it's only been a few days.) please share with me!! thanks! xo, misa Posted on 03/22/09, 02:03 pm |

Yes I've actually had the hysimoto{spelled wrong} hypothryriodism long before I had the addison's diagnose. My thyriod never stays the same! I'm always up or down. It has made a big affect on my life. One doctor called it Schmidt's syndrome when you have both. I'm tired all the time. My energy level is so low compared to before the addison's. My weight goes up and down alot too. I've also got ashma and depression. I have to work everyday it seems to push myself through. I sure hope it gets better. Grannydeb

Misa,
I too was diagnosed hypothyroid long ago. I think it is fairly common to have multiple endocrine issues if you have one. I do know that cortilsol and thyroid hormones need each other to work effectivey, and they are supposed to correct the adrenal problem before supplementing the thyroid, though my doctor says you have to do both simultaneously. Some people get a big boost when they start on synthroid, though my doctor prefers a more bio equivalent med - armour thyroid. I have not noticed any energy improvement on either, though the armour thyroid does ramp me up a bit when i take too much. Most recommend taking the medication on an empty stomach in the morning. And don't take any calcium for 2 hours before or after taking it. Calcium interferes with it. Vanyel

Hello! I got diagnosed with hypothyroid first when I was 20, then Addison's Disease when I was 30 {actually had it when I was pregnant but didn't rear it's ugly head until after the baby was born}. I am told that it is part of a triple play. The third thing is pernicious anemia. I am also told to that this is thanks to my Scandanavian genes!

it's so great to be able to come here and ask around, as opposed to not knowing *anyone* in a situation even CLOSE to mine, you know? you're all great! xo, misa

I have had both conditions for over 30 years. All my meds keep me in balance and I am able to fully function. I have lots of energy, however, I have put on a lot of weight over the years. But I come from those genes anyway!

Autoimmune Hypothyroidism (which is Hashimotos' Disease) & Addison's are call Schmitts Syndrome. or Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type II. Very rare actually I was told by a doctor I met a dinner discussion. I have Hashimoto's and Addison's too.

I too, have both Addisons and Hypothyroid. For me the hardest of the two to manage, by far is the thyroid. I recently switched from levothyroxine to synthroid and am due to test my levels again in a few weeks. Make sure that your doc tests your levels regularly. You will have to read up on thryoid, stay on the boards and figure out much of this yourself especially since the symptoms of both Addisons and thryoid can be similar and it is very difficult to sort out which is which. Having said that make sure to take your pill first thing in the morning, don't take with calcium and maybe hold off on any multi vitamin until a few hours later. Your energy level should pick up just pay attention to your body and have your doc increase your meds if needed. Good luck!!
