My son does jujitsu and kids in the gym, (rhys is 10) lately we've noticed that for a day or so after he complains that his legs ache, we are aware that it's could be just because he has a pretty good little work out, but will he be more prone to aches and pains due to his addisons.
His instuctors know about his condition and he drinks plenty during his activities and they slow him down if they think he may be pushing himself to much. thanks kellers Posted on 04/22/09, 06:04 am |

I read once that if a person with Addison's is working out really hard they should take a little extra cortisol. Maybe he needs a bit more cortisol on the days he is working out so hard? The paper I read was talking about serious athletes, not just your average exercise - but if he's really putting his all into it, it may be he needs a bit extra. Just a thought.

Thanks for replying. I've read about that aswell, his legs are still aching now and its thursday. Although Rhys is only 10 he is quite well educated about his addisons, he knows what he needs to know for his age without scaring him and he knows his limits although we do need to keep an eye on him because he will say mum i'm fine when i know he needs to have a bit of a rest.
His jujitsu lessons are an hour long twice a week and his kids in the gym is 45 minutes once a week but now its quite sunny so he his playing with his friends outside or on the trampoline in the garden after school aswell, i think maybe he has just over done it a bit this week. He his having some bloods done on monday so i can speek to his consultant then.

Good idea. I don't know what dose of cortisol he is on, but I would think a bit extra on those busy days would not be a bad idea. Ask your doc about it. Some probably won't go along with it, but its worth asking about. I know I do it for myself when I am overphysical. Otherwise I pay for it for days. Its always difficult to know how much you need. Good luck.

Hi,
Rhys's hydrocortisone is 5mg at 6am, 5mg at 10am, 2.5mg at 3pm and 2.5 at 9pm. If i'm honest i dont like to give him extra unless he is ill because he is so young but then his endo knows what activities he does outside of school and thinks it is a good idea that he does them and rhys really enjoys them. Friday now and legs are still a bit achey and he seemed a bit more tired when he got up this morning than usual.I will spk to him monday though and see what he recommends. kellers

hi,
Spoke to an endo today on the ward Rhys goes to (not his own oendo though) and they recommend upping his doses, just not to push himself when he is doing his activities and if the leg aches become continueous then to contact them. kellers
