Potential Donor for AML Pt

Hi, I'm a 27 year old mom of 2. I recently got a call form the bone marrow registry that I may be a potential match for a 77 yr old man with AML. I have looked up AML but still have so many questions about it. Of course if I am the final match I am donating. I am trying find out some more info about AML. Has anyone here been on the recieving end of a stem cell transplant? I just want to be clear that none of the info I am gathering is going to affect my decision of being a donor if chosen. Even if it gave my pt a 1% chance I would still try it. Jus veryurious about AML since I have never heard of it before this.

" My dad recently passed away, he had AML and the stem cell transplant gave us all hope. I am thankful everyday for the donor, they gave my dad a chance at life. Even though the side effects from the transplant ended up doing more harm than good, my family is so thankful for the chance of life it brought my dad. You are amazing for even considering being a donor. Thank you! If you have any more questions let me know. "

" Thank you so much for your reply. I'm so so very sorry to hear about your dad.
I have done my blood work and that came back fine but I still have not heard anything back from the marrow registry. They said it could be up to 2 months before I would hear anything b/c it all depends on the pt and his dr.
If you don't mind my asking how old was your dad? From what I've learned so far it seemes that it is pretty common for the pt to be older. I have to say I was a little suprised when I found out my pt was 77. They didn't even tell me until I asked, I think maybe they thought I would reconsider but that is not the case. I was glad to hear they would go to such extreme treatments on a pt of his age. I know if it were someone close to me I would hope and pray for the same. Thanks again for all of your kind words.
By the way, did your family get to contact the donor even though your dad passed? Just curious if you were still given the option. "

" I recieved my Bone Marrow Transplant in the form of a peripheral stem cell transplant in July of 2008 :)) I am now 14 months post transplant dealing with the effects of Graft Versus Host Disease which is basically my body and the donor cells fighting for territory lol. So far my cells are losing and the donor cells are winning which is a good thing :))))

I don't know how to express to my donor how greatful and thankful I am for the opportunity to keep living. Without a donor, I was looking at a death sentence. I was blessed with a 10 out of 10 genetic marker match and a relatively quick transplant-- and that has given me the chance to live a longer life, Plan for a family (via surrogate mother), and continue to celebrate every day that I have been given.

It is overwhelming how much emotion and love I have for the man who gave me his immune system. So overwhelming that I am afraid I will never be able to share how much it means to me... "
