My husband was diagnosed with large granular lymphositic leukemia in October, 2006; three weeks before our wedding. Fortunately, doctors at Stanford University found that this rare form of leukemia is treatable and, possibly, curable. There are many people out there, though, that don't receive such a hopeful diagnosis. Did you know that more than 785,000 Americans have leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma? Did you know that every five minutes, someone new is diagnosed; every ten minutes someone dies? Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer death among children and young adults under the age of 20. Please help Tom and me raise awareness of an event called Light the Night. Thousands of people around Fresno will gather at Fresno State on October 6, 2007, to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Around 7:00 p.m. we will make a two-mile walk, holding illuminated balloons- white for survivors and red for supporters- and light the night with hope. More than that, the evening includes music, food and family activities. As Team Captain, I encourage you to become involved in this worthwhile endeavor, and to give yourself the experience of helping others. You will be glad you joined us. Call me or register online with me (Erin Gustafson) or my team (Gustafson's Gang) at www.lightthenight.org.
