How can I best help my grandson and family?

We just discovered my seven year old grandson has ALL. I live 6 hours away and have brought my granddaughter age 4 to stay with me for the first 6 weeks (or more) of chemo. I understand this is going to be a long haul.
Should I move closer to support my daughter? That is my plan right now. How long will it be before we know if the chemo is effective? The % survival rate is something like 80% for five years. But no where can I find numbers that go beyond that---what is the "long term" survival rate? In other words, what is the life expectancy of someone who makes it past 5 years? Does it revert to a normal life span? I have so many questions and I don't want to upset my daughter. I lost my youngest son last May in an automobile accident; it is almost unbearable to have to watch my daughter live in the fear of losing her son. My granddaughter misses her family terribly and I don't feel like I am doing enough for her, can anyone suggest what I can do to help her adjust more and to understand? Posted on 01/07/08, 03:01 am |
