What is it about people that makes them believe that my wheelchair MUST mean that I can not walk AT ALL?

I usually just say a prayer for rude people who say, "she can stand up, she doesn't need that chair." But I do get tired of people believing this idiocy. I guess it is just another cross to bear.

I'd just love to create a PSA explaining that people need wheelchairs to move as fast as the crowd, because walking is exhausting, and theme parks are just too dam large for a handicapped person to get around.

ANyone else face these idiots in the world?
How do you deal?
Do you ever tell them off?
Does explaining it to them work at all?

" I too often use a wheelchair when I go somewhere that requires a lot of walking or standing. I also use the power scooters provided by some stores for the same reasons. i have never had anyone actually come up and say, oh you can walk, but i have had people stare as I stand up and limp away. I have faced the if you walked more you would be able to get around better. This from my own mother. She has taken my 5 year old daughter and I to a horse show for the last 2 years. It is inside but is very large with many stands. There are a lot of people there also. It is too much for me to walk and I get knocked off balance very easily and get afraid if there are too many people. i am always worried someone will bump into me and knock me down. She told me last year that she will not take me this year unless i can walk the whole thing because it is too much trouble to take me in my wheelchair. Her and I went to the mall the other day because she wanted my help finishing up her Christmas shopping for my kids. I did not bring my chair because I know how she feels about it. We started through the mall and she kept having to stop to wait up for me because i walk so slowly. She finally gave up and rented a wheelchair for me. "

" You bring up another thing that gets to me sometimes. My family walks just ahead of me. I try to keep up but the faster I walk, the faster they walk. It is like a darn race.
I usually just stop walking and it takes them a minute to realize that I am no longer with them. Then the stupidly ask, "what's wrong?" After so many decades, I say, "what do you think?" They walk slower for about two minutes then they walk away without me.

Family is the worst. I think they take us for granted. What they don't realize is that we will probably go before them. Then they will realize what they are missing. Imagine the sorrow when they realize that they had a chance to make life easier and screwed it up. "

" My Mom thinks it is time for me to be "better" now. That if I would work harder and walk more than I would be healed. I consider my self lucky that i am alive and can walk at all. I have learned to deal with the fact that I limp, walk slowly and need help getting around when i am going to be somewhere where a lot of walking/standing is available. My husband though, he will sometimes forget that i can not walk as fast of that I need a steadying hand when walking on uneven ground. We live where they have a lot of out door carnivals and festivals and fairs and it is almost impossible to push me in my wheelchair through the grass. sometimes he will walk ahead and then suddenly remember and he will come back for me. I know it is hard on him. He never thought when he married me that I would some day rely on his help so heavily. He loves me and has never complained about it but I am sure it must be hard. I know how much i wish i could keep up, but I just can't and if I try it just drains my energy that much faster. I sometimes wonder if they don't realize that it takes extra energy to walk when you don't do it well. i have a bad limp and wear a metal leg brace, so I have the extra weight of the brace and have to work the hinges on the brace every step I take. That all takes energy. There for it tires me out faster. i have limited myself to the places I go knowing that i will either have to walk or someone will have to push me. I miss the days of not worrying and just packing up and going. "

" How wondeful to find someone who understands! I am sorry that you suffer as much as I do!!! But somehow there is strength in knowing that I am not all alone. It is lonely having no one who even tries to understand. I know, I know they have no frame of reference to understand. Thank God for that - how would the family survive if more than one of us needed a chair :-)

I know the county fair thingy is a real struggle isn't it. It is so hard to push a chair in soft soil. Someday when I grow up, I am going to design a chair that can go in sand, mulch, and soft soil.

Thank you so much for sharing. You really lifted my spirits tonight.
God bless you "

" When you invent that chair let me know and i will happily test it out. i think big wheels that are easy maybe for us to move ourselves would be nice. Maybe you could make it a power chair. Except they are so heavy and don't fold. Maybe if it was light with big fat wheels. You would need big ones on the front too though. I think they are what causes the chair not to move well through the grass and sand. Let me know when you have it invented. A friend of mine and me want to invent a baby car seat that you pull up a handle and wheels pop out so you can either push it or pull it. You know those infant seats with the handles that you carry. They are quite heavy. I could never carry one and walk. It would throw my balance off plus it is just too heavy. What do ya think. We could make millions? "

" We sure would. In the economy it would be nice. Sure would take a load off of my plate. Put a turbo charger in it so then they are asking you to slow down, instead of the other way around. "

" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That is really funny! Wouldn't it be really great to have them ask us to slow down.

Don't mean to upset any spiritual values but when I get to Heaven I am gonna walk so dam fast that even the angels will stand back and just sing to get me to slow down.

I have a garden there too for all the abused and neglected animals and the wild ones who were injured by vehicles and left to die on the side of the road.

You are right about the little front wheels being the problem. I have not figured out how to fix that because they are the turning wheels. When I do, I am going to patent the idea and commission it.

I won't make any money though because there are lots of people who can't afford two chairs. I would give them away to the needy so they can have a day out at the fair just like me. (I am such a soft touch!)

GOd love you. THis has been so great for my soul to share with you!!!! "
