My daughter is 4 1/2 and was dx at the start of this school year with ADHD. We have been on two different medications in different doages. And I have a call into the doctor now, because of the problems we are having from this. I feel so helpless. Does it always take this long in getting the right medication?

" Sometimes it does and sometimes it can be other things causing this. I am ADHD as well as my husband and 18 year old son. When my son was that age and younger medication did not work at all for him so I tried diet. I found out anything with red and blue dye in it would send him into a fit acting out. I took out a lot of sugar and junk from his diet and it worked. I got him into activities we went outside for walks bike riding and at 7 he started riding horses and this did more then any medication. I myself had horses and while working training and riding I didnt need my meds now I do not have my horses I am on meds and can not miss a day. I have a question with investigation and close watching and advise I found out my son also had sensory integeration I know I spelled it wrong but look it up it can cause a lot of the adhd symptoms to be 100% worse and yes they do out grown this my son did. My son is now 18 honor student, and also a SPC in the US Army. Never been in trouble and his school is honoring him this month for outstanding achievments and for his advancement in the Army. he does honor guard for veteran funerals and is involved in many things so now it looks like a long hard rd but it really isnt. Do not let the medication get to you. Try other things. My son also went to occupational therapy at 7 years old and this helped him 100%. He is a little hyper but puts all that extra energy into doing things positive. i wish I could say the same for me lol but I try. Good luck look into sensory intr. and take things out of your childs diet. good luck "

" Thanks for responding, I feel think we are all alone in this. We tried removing things from her diet starting at 3, and it helped. But as she got older it stopped helping, that is when we got her offical dx and started medication. I feel helpless because I feel think we are not doing what is best for her. I know that there has to be a better way to handle her when she "melt downs" . We are going Monday to a behavior therapy specialist, I hope she will give us better ways to handle things. I feel like we need to change as parents so there is not always a battle at home. "

" Take comfort in knowing this is a common, almost routine, issue with ANY drug that regulates brain chemistry. I wish the prescribing doctors would offer this caveat when they decide to treat people with these drugs. But I, too, had to learn the hard way that it's a trial and error process. Sometimes, you get lucky. My experience? It took me over 3 years of switching meds to reach the conclusion that NONE of the drugs work for my form of the disorder ADD -- Inattentive type. Talk about feeling rejected.

On the other hand, although we had the same process with my son, we finally learned that Concerta works wonders for him with his ADD - Hyperactive type.

Every person is different, but the process is the same. Hang in there. "
