Hi all, so I was recently diagnosed with ADD. It makes so much sense, and I am Vyvanse daily. It makes my ADD symptoms a lot better but unfortunately it has made my anxiety a lot worse. When the med is working my ADD is under check but after about 6-8 hours I start getting really anxious, racing unwanted thoughts, etc...
I've already tried non-stim solutions and they have not helped at all. I take St. Johns Wort and it has helped with depression, but not really anxiety. I know when I tell my doc this tomorrow he is going to want to put me on an SSRI. I don't want to do this because of the side effects and I will worry for weeks about killing myself. I always assume the bad effects of drugs will happen to me. What ifs.... He is against the St. Johns Wort even though it is clinically proven to help as much as standard SSRI in mild to moderate depression. I notice it as well. I used to be depressed and anxious, now I'm just anxious. The anxiety is brought on by ADD as I have never had a panic attack, just in my head with worry all the time. Hyperfocusing on it and feeling crazy. Anyways to the point, I have researched Buspar. Has anyone taken this and has it helped? Also, what side effects can I look forward to? I don't want to obsessively look in my mind for suicidal ideation until I decide to quit taking it like I have with Zoloft and Prozac. Posted on 11/09/09, 09:11 pm |

I know that I have to take an anti depressant, stimulant, benzo and muscle relaxers at the moment. I found the last three to be most beneficial as I can go days without my effexor and never even notice it was there to begin with. I know if you are like me and have been depressed for a long time and then suddenly start taking stimulant meds, its quite a change. I found that there was a "hurdle" of anxiety for about two or three days but symptoms were physical in my case. If I have to give presentations or have a really bad panic attack the ativan rescues me. I have not tried Buspar yet. I've gone from trazodone, lexapro, prozac, lamictal, effexor and seroquel. At best they all have been placebo. Many people do report success within the first two meds though. St. Johns Wort is an MAOI which should not be used with SSRIs and I think even stimulant use may be contraindicated as the excess dopamine being shunted from the neuronal cells would not break down nearly as fast as they should. I could be wrong though.

I find that I love the stimulants, but it does raise my anxiety like crazy. I take 36mg of concerta in the AM along with 20mg of prozac. i feel my heart pounding after a few hours. My blood pressure is around average, it's my anxiety thats giving me chest pains. when i take the prozac alone without the concerta my anxiety level is much lower. its a tradeoff.

I'm on Vyvance and know exactly what you're talking about. It seems like I feel anxious because I'm seeing some of the things I was obvlivious to before. I've been on an anti-anxiety med for about a month and it has made a big difference.

Check our drugs.com. There are medical professionals on that site that answer questions for free AND it is an excellent way to research the side effects and other things associated with any medications. If you don't agree with your doctor, you can always get a second opinion. I will be praying for you though b/c regardless, I don't wish for you or anyone else to have suicidal thoughts. Your comments and questions help people who read it but may not be as bold as you to ask the things you are thinking. You are not alone in your experience and I am grateful that you chose to share it with others.

So my doc prescribed me Lexapro. She says St. Johns Wort is clincally proven to help with depression but not anxiety. So she told me I can wake up tomorrow and start taking the lexapro, 5 mg at first moving up to 10. She said as long as I don't take the St. Johns Wort I should be fine. It seemed kind of strange to me though, doesn't it take several weeks to clear your system? Will I be safe if I switch without waiting for the St. Johns to clear? I'm really anxious about taking the Lexapro but willing to try it as I love the Vyvanse just need help with the anxiety side effect.

i take adderall xr 10 mg some days when i feel very lost and absent. like im lacking a personality and will be around whoever will condole me.
i remember times before having the anxiety i think it is brought on by the uppers. i had a scary freakout on wellbutrin so i'm trying self help and trying to find inner peace.. and its hard. lately i've been keeping to myself a lot and not letting others peoples voices affect me. i am trying to get back to a place where i know best and i can be confident in my abilities to face the day.

My anxiety comes on when I do not keep myself occupied. However, for the most part, my 30 mg Adderall XR dose only makes me focus and work much better. I think if anyones heart rate is pounding they should tell their doctor right away... Usually to high of a dose of stimulants. Or, it could simply be that you are prone to panic attacks and need a fast acting anti-anxiety med on top of the Vyvanse. Lexapro did nothing for me... Ativan and Adderall XR have significantly improved the quality of my life. Sometimes, even though I felt normal on Adderall, I would still get panic attacks and needed that mild benzo to calm me down. Overall however my adhd meds do not make me anxious; only initially they did. It helps to to stay active and hydrated. Do something, whether it is light reading, homework, chatting or talking a walk.
