Does anyone else wonder if giving their children meds for adhd is going to harm them in the long run? My son takes vyvance. He is 8 and the school cant tolerate him unmedicated. His dr. says there are no long term side effects, but how can they say that when the drug has not been around that long. When i researched the drug, sudden death is listed as a side effect. Can anyone tell me that their kids took these meds for x years and now they are a normally functioning person. I'm afraid his brain will be fried before he's a teen and i'll be taking care of him for the rest of my life. If anyone has any insight please share with me. I need a little reassurance. Thank you.

Not sure if you've seen this or not yet, but this site has an info section on common treatments. You can get at least a little more info at: http://www.dailystrength.org/treat... I would ask a pharmacist, not a doctor about the long term effects of the drug on the liver. Sorry I can't be of more help.

My husband is a medical professional and although the pharmacist may be of help, a docotr, if they are a medical doctor, knows just as much if not more then a pharmacist would about the long term side effects. If you are concerned that your child's doctor will not tell you the long term effects b/c of their personal interest in medicating your child, speak to another doctor.
Also, their is a website called drug.com. It is somewhat similar to this in that a lot of people on that site deal with various things like OCD, ADHD & ADD, ect. the differences is about 85% of the people on that site ARE a part of the medical community. It is free and that may be helpful. I spoke to my hubby about this and the bottom line is that ALL medication, be it for children or adults, have potential harmful side effects. However, when dealing with children, their immune system tends to be more compromised (especially the younger they are) because their bodies have not learned to adapt and/or tolerate some of the things are body has learned to fight off. The bottom line is that you have to decide whether the potential risk and side effects of the medication outweigh the positive results that the medicine may have on your child. Everyone is different and as much as most of us have children or are personally effected by ADHD (it's personal for me, my hubby has ADD and I have both ADD and ADHD), medication and treatment still is very much dependent on that person's body, behavior, etc. My husband has never been medicated. Today is day 16 of my medication of Adderall and I am 30 years old. I never was medicated and my parents were not open to it. I do have family members and associates who have been on medication and the results vary. Some have definitely had long term results and others are fine. If you are concerned about the medication, seek a second opinion from a separate doctor and seek ways to see how other things like psycho therapy, etc can assist with your child. IT WILL NOT BE EASY! I have worked with children with autism, OCD, various learning disorders and ADHD. You will need to be able to endure a lot of patience and know that it is not an easy process. Good luck to you.
