Neurologist vs. Psychiatrist

My kids' medicaid program only has one outpatient psychiatry/Mental Health group to serve in our entire county (population upwards of 1,200,000), which obviously makes it completely bogged down in red tape, beauracracy, and impossible scheduling. I've heard here that some people go to neurologists instead. Can I have your thoughts?

" Is this to be diagnosed? Either or.
I take my son to a psychiatry. My friend takes her son to a neurologist. Go with what's on your plan.

hugs and good luck "

" They have both been diagnosed. We missed an appointment, and I dread waiting 4 months to see the doctor next! "

" see if there is a neurologist on the plan.
If not, ask to get on the waiting list for canceled appointments and take your kids out of school if you get called.

I wish you luck. "

" A neurologist will see what is going on with the brain, perhaps order an MRI of the brain and perhaps do a variety of several test. The psychiatrist will too. Both are beneficial as long as your insurance covers it. Look them up (the psychiatrist and neurologist) to see what their reputations are in the community and in their field of medicine. Either though could be helpful. "
