Again.. I am new to this, but I wanted to get opinions from all of you who have ADD and all of you who have treated your children with ADD. I have a 10 year old son who has just been diagnosed with ADD, ODD, and anxiety. I have been around a lot of children who are highly medicated because my mother takes care of them in her home for families who can't. I have always felt opposed to how much medication some of those kids are on, but tried not to judge since I knew I didn't know enough about it. It was just reaction to feel like, "oh my gosh!" Anyways.. When I found out my son had it, I was like okay so now what? Do I have to turn him into a zombie or give him meds that will have a ton of side affects and possibly get him dependent on them?! It took me a long day to realize I needed to put aside my early notion to be fair to him and learn as much about every option possible. So here I am.. trying to learn. Right now I have him taking Melatonin to help him sleep which is working really well so far. I just got some natural stuff in 3 days ago that we are trying, but so far I haven't seen much of a difference with that. It does say it takes a while sometimes to see a difference, so I am still hopeful. But I am here to learn and soak up all your knowledge All you fellow ADD friends out there.. Let me have it!!

I will get back with you. I just wanted to reply to support your endeavors of trying to be open minded about the situation on behalf of your son. My parents were not that open.
At any rate, I have worked with so many children with those symptoms and would love to offer some imput, but I want to do a little bit of research and talk to a few friends and colleagues who are in your exact situation before I give a full out response. I have ADD and ADHD so I definitely sympathize. However, I was not given medications (even though I probably needed them). I am 30 years old and today is only day 5 of me taking medications, I am taking one pill per morning and I have been prescribed Adderall 30 mg (not Adderall XR). This is a trial and error attempt for me (taking the meds) but I am trying to embrace it. If I feel it makes the difference that it is supposed to, I will continue to take it at least through the end of February 2010 (I am taking the bar exam at that time). If not, it is what it is but being open is important and I commend you for doing so. I am sure others will respond soon when they get the time. Stay encouraged and know that all is going to be just fine.

My son is taking Concerta. We have tried Omega 3 with disasterous results. It is my belief that natural remedies might work for those who have mild cases. My son's Hyperactivity charted nearly off the scale so I think that is why only the medication is helping him. Concerta has some of the fewest side affects and in no way turns him into a zombie. He is able to sit reasonably still during lessons and at meals. At th end of the day it is totally up to you. All medications have side affects, from aspirin to vaccinations. In the end it comes down to whether you feel the benefits outway the risks. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your responses. It really helped to hear your opinion about if he's on the low end of the scale, which I was told he is, so hopefully these natural remedies will start kicking in. We had a good week and it gave me hope that there are much better days to look forward to!
