My son is four and was just diagnosed with ADHD. I really know very little about it and don't really know where to go from here. Any advice anyone could offer would be helpful. I'm trying to reseach all my options before we go back to the doctor in 2 weeks.

" ADD or ADHD or vague terms without established definitions. While a 9 year old with consistent problems in school could be diagnosed, a diagnosis for a 4 year old who cannot speak should be difficult. 4 year olds are rebunctious and some more active than others, some acquire language and others less quickly, but that does not automatically mean ADD. " My son wasn't diagnosed until he was six, but we had behavior problems for much longer. I'm sure if we hd taken him to the doctor when he was 4, he wouldn't have been kicked out of preschool. I would recommend doing research on the web and at your local library. It helped me to understand what ADHD is, what meds are used, why they work, and the side effects of each one. The more informed you are, the calmer you will be. That can only help you and your son in the long run. Also you will know what questions to ask his doctor. Hang in there! "

" Hi my son has ADHD and was diagnosed at the age of nine after three years of therapy, i was not so sure at first when they suggested him having RITALIN, then i decided yes because things were getting out of hand his behaviour and lack of socialising, once on the medication i saw a big improvement and have not looked back since. Ritalin does not cure ADHD but it is a huge help. My son is now 20yrs and still taking ritalin and probably will do for time to come.If you want any more information please ask if i can advise you i will because having a child with ADHD does have a huge effect on family and friends. " I also have a 4 year old that was recently diagnosed ADHD. I am struggling as a single mother dealing with this child and could use some support. I'm not opposed to meds, but I think at the age of 4, he is too young. Have any of you had experience with this at such a young age? I'm very concerned about side effects. My doctor mentioned that side effects are greater in younger children. I'm so confused! "
