My son has ADHD. He is 6 years old almost 7 and has been on meds since he was 5. He was on Ritalin for over a year and did well with them, until he started ticking (bad) Had to take him off. Then after a few days he stopped ticking. Then was put on Strattera which made him sleep. It didn't help.(5 long weeks) Then he was put on Focalin which helped. After being on this for about 7 months he started ticking again. OMG when does it stop. So I took him off until we could get to the dr. and then he wanted him on Vyvanse. I gave him one pill, he was still ticking and the meds made him out of it. He got very angry and sad. Highs and Lows. He has been off his meds for a week and half and does well at home, but he is still having problems at summer school with keeping his hands to himself. At home he is happy and loving. When he is with other children he is always touching them, and sometimes hurts them. (pushing and hitting) He still is having a small tick, but not as bad. Has anyone gotten a tick while on the meds and what did you do? Does it stop?

My son is on concerta. He doesn't get ticks, he gets "habits". Things like clearing his throat, coughing, or moaning. He doesn't realize he is doing it until I tell him to stop. He does stop eventually, until the next habit forms. Ask your doctor if he thinks Concerta would work for your son. Good Luck!

What does your son do with his adhd that you can't control without meds? I am not saying to stop taking meds, but maybe a less of a dosage would work. Not taking them on a regular basis is not a good thing.

My son had ticks on Vyvance. I'm gonna try something new when he starts back to school. We don't give him meds in the summer or on weekends.

My son has tics too. Before I put him on meds, he had an occasional tic, but it seems to have worsened when we started meds. We were doing a trial of Biphentin, where 15mg was ok, with occasional tics, and 20mg was ridiculous. My son has a head nodding tic, that was almost constant on the 20mg. I've scaled it back down since then, and he still has them but not as frequent, and I notice it more at certain times or certain days than others. It's frustrating because the meds are working SO WELL for his focus and his impulsivity, with virtually no other side effects. And then this has to happen. :(
Something else I noticed is that since school has been over. it's virtually gone. If he's doing something fun that he enjoys, or if he's busy, there are no tics at all; it's just when he's tired or idle that I notice them. I've recently been reading about nervous tics, and it makes me wonder if that is what my son has. He's had a really rough year in school and didn't like his teacher at all.. and this is where the tics were really bad. I don't know. It's very frustrating, I know. My doctor said to leave it for the summer unless the tics get worse, and then in September we can explore other options. He recommended Strattera because it is a non-stimulant, but I know that doesn't always work either. There has to be a happy medium. I just want them to go away altogether. I understand your concerns. I hate it. :(

I was on Concerta for 3 years and developed tics. They included shrugging my shoulders, sniffling and jerking my head. It was really annoying and my parents didn't believe that I couldn't control them. i commend you for being compassionate towards your son's problem.
Now I am on Metadate, and all of my tics have either disappeared or are far less severe. I recommend that you research it and talk to your doctor.

Please dont take this the wrong way.. he might be having small seizures/or aspergers. I would seriously ask your doctor for an egg or ekg i can't remember which one measures them.

My son has stop ticing. It took 2 weeks this time. We are taking him to a neurologist later this month. He was in summer school, but that lasted 6 days.. To stressful. He is on no meds at this point. He does ok for us at home, but he can't go to school without meds. I will keep you up-dated on what I find out. He is loving life now that he's not in school.

My son tried Concerta two different times for 1 day each b/c within 3 hours it created a very pronounced tic. Apparently this is extrememly common and have heard 2 different doctors say that in some instances the tics can become permanent. I'm doing more research into diet and nutrition. A good place to start is the gluten free, casein free (GFCF) diet.
