My son was diagnosed with ADHD recently and we will be starting him on medication soon. I would like to know if there are any natural ways to help his ADHD so that we can use the least amount of drug with the most affect. I have heard about cutting out red dyes in food, but I didn't know if anyone else had other things that we could us. I am looking for things like foods that will help calm him, or foods we should cut out of his diet?
Please help me... Posted on 06/12/09, 11:06 am |

Here's my 2 cents. 23 years old, diagnosed ADHD in 3rd grade. Things I've noticed... I took ritalin in 3rd grade and I attribute it with my grades going from C to A. Started honors classes in junior high. I had great grades in high school. I am now on adderall attending college for a double major in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering and a minor in applied mathematics. I am also tutoring other students in math. I should emphasize that my symptoms of adhd were probably stronger than ALL of your children. I would challenge any child to disprove this. :]
Fish oil helps, definitely worth taking. I would say by far, the most "natural supplement" is simply working out/ exercising regularly, and especially joining a sports team or club. Helped in all aspects of my life for me. Imo for someone who has adhd, you need to maintain a competitive atmosphere or engaging activity, it helps mobilize and motivate all other aspects of their life, VERY important! The individual with adhd must always create the "carrot at the end of the stick" environment to succeed and inspire other shortcomings in his life. A good psychologist will emphasize this. Without this, it is common for all other aspects of their life to fall by the waste-side. Another great source for information is Claire Albright's youtube channel. If you don't know how to find youtube channel's, your kids probably do, haha. Message me for any questions about adhd if you want. I'm not a doctor but I have ADHD and have made changes to accomodate my life.

My 4-1/2 year old son was just preliminarily diagnosed ADHD. I'm waiting the completion of his evaluation, but ODD and Intermittent Explosive Disorder has been mentioned as well. I am a nervous wreck about meds -- I keep reading about all of the side effects. I am a single mother, so I get the brunt of all of his outburts, etc. Needless to say, things are very stressful in our home. Although I'm not the original poster, I appreciate all of the advice that has been posted to this thread. I am definitely going to look further into diet. Something has to change or I am going to go insane.

I totally agree with the fish oils my son takes them as well as my daughter. I also have my teenage daughter on Attend it's a Homeopathic treatment for ADHD/ADD. I have seen leaps and bounds of improvement for her they are hard to swallow though for little kids. My 3 year old son takes Bright Sparks, which is also a Homeopathic treatment. I wasn't too sure it was worth it he's taken it for several months and seemed to be okay. I ran out of it and he's been OFF THE WALL!! I can't believe what it was doing for him and I just wasn't realizing it. So needless to say he's back on it. When he was off it for the 3 weeks, he wet his pants constatnly and was just OUT OF CONTROL and now he's calming down. I am a FAN of Natural remedies so you may want to give it a try. :)

I am raising my grandson. He is adhd , OCD, and developmentally delayed. He is on vayvance 20 mg and a .o1 clonidine at night. I cut his clonidine in half and give him benadryl. He doesn`t wake up as cranky anymore and seems to help him slepp better. Used to he didn`t sleep through the night. Keep as many sugars and caffeine and dyes away. Go organic when possible. All kids are different though so try to notice what sets him off.
