Natural ways to treat ADHD

My son was diagnosed with ADHD recently and we will be starting him on medication soon. I would like to know if there are any natural ways to help his ADHD so that we can use the least amount of drug with the most affect. I have heard about cutting out red dyes in food, but I didn't know if anyone else had other things that we could us. I am looking for things like foods that will help calm him, or foods we should cut out of his diet?
Please help me...

" We reduced our son's sugar intake as much as possible and noticed a difference right away. Even natural sugar from fruit can effect his behavior. We didn't cut it out all together, we are just very aware of how much he consumes. "

" Keep a food diary and see what triggers sets off your son's symptoms. Then by avoiding these things, your son could do better.

Take care... :-) "

" Avoid Glucose sugars(candy and sweeteners), and MSG in his food, less caffeine(chocolate and coke) and less salt in his food.

Give him more protein and multi vitamins and give him more omega 3(fish). "

" Essentially anything red, yellow, or white will react poorly. Any simple carbs at all cancels out the good effects of the meds.

Exercise, good diet, martial arts or yoga, 2,000 units of fish oil, a good B-complex, multivitamin, potassium, and GABA at night is helpful and all this should help 30%.

70% of the improvement comes from either the stimulant or the all natural alternative ADD-care. "

" Check out the brain scans at www.add-care.com and on www.youtube.com

It is an all natural supplement that I developed and have done research on compared to adderall at the Amen Clinic. "

" I was wondering where would you find the GABA? In March my 5 year old had a psych eval done and he was diagnosed with Internittent Explosive disorder, ADHD(combined type), ODD, with signs of Conduct disorder. The docs have him on vyvanse(20 mg), and clonidine(0.1 mg)doc say that's the only persription strength it comes in, and then they had me get OTC Melatonin(3 mg). He still don't sleep thru the night. He wake up 2-3 times a night, goes to sleep at about 9 p.m. and is up at 5 a.m. so then he is cranky and pretty uncontrollable all day. Right after Christmas my oldest had some sleeping pills that were prescibed and the doc said I could give him one the night before he went back to school so he could get a good nights sleep, so I did. Well the next day he acted like a normal kids. Since my daughter wasn't using them anymore I continued to give then to him until they were gone, they lasted 2 weeks, he behaved the best I had seen him in a very long time, because he rested. So if this GABA might get him to rest I'm thinking it's worth a try. I looked at the 2 drug stores here in my hometown and I didn't see any I even seached it on the web and found out the full name so I would hopefully know what to look for. So if you have more info on it I would appriciate it. Thanks "

" My son takes 1000mg of fish oil. He's 6 and weighs 50 lbs, too. Nordic Naturals makes a junior gel-cap that can be chewed (yuck) or swallowed. My son was taking 2 of those. Since he likes taking pills so much I switched him to one adult size (they're gigantic). Fish oil can't help you. You can also add flax oil to his food (after cooking).

I have done a lot of research about diet. A standard diet you can start with is outlined here: http://newideas.net/adhd/adhd-diet

The gluten free, casein free (GFCF) diet is also highly recommended for these kids. http://gfcf-diet.talkaboutcuringau... (don't let the word autism distract you) I have tried it and while we did notice some positive effects in my son, it didn't seem to affect his hyperactivity or impulsiveness. I'm thinking of trying the Feingold diet. One of the main points about this diet is NO FOOD DYES and no artificial preservatives. A lot of people think it's the sugar that affects their kids but really it's food dyes. It takes a lot of commitment to stick to a special diet but you would be surprised how cooperative your son might be; I know I was.

I'm also going to try B-12 in its broken down form. Let us know if you find something that works!
Caryn "
