Anyone With ADD & Bi-Polar?

I have both.

I'm sure the ADD was diagnosed first.

Then the bi-polar, which I sometimes think is a fad.

I was wondering if you have both, how can you tell what symptoms are from what disorder? How do you handle the double trouble of having two mental issues?

" I have both and yes they are really hard to see seperately. For me ADD is my inability to "get down to business" in that it takes me a really long time to do the task in front of me because I won't do it until I feel ready-then I can't stop doing the task until it's finished-even if it's 1AM.The feeling ups and downs seem to be the province of being bipolar. Doing or not doing or doing too much as is my case seems to be ADD. Feeling invinceable or worthless just bipolar showing its ugly face. "

" I can't believe there aren't more people out there with ADD and some other diagnoses.

I was curious how your pdoc treats both? "

" I wish my bipolar was a fad. Heck, maybe it is? ??? At any rate, many, many people often have co-morbid (word sounds weird) afflictions. Yes, hard to tell what's what sometimes, but I'm clear when I'm going through a bi-polar depression. It's different from being unclear and unfocused. It's...well, depressing. "

" i have both and i was diagnosed about a month ago. the bipolar comes out usually when i drink. i'll get really really emotional and it switches so quick. i'll be happy one minute, then angry then said the next. the ADD is an everyday thing where i can't focus, stay organized, and a huge procrastinator. my pdoc put me on abilify and adderall and it seems to be working quite well! " I have both as well. It's not a fad. My bipolar has put me on disability. It's damn hard to get on disability. They don't take to fads. Now that I'm fairly stable with my meds for biploar I am only NOW beginning to attack the issue of my ADHD. It has taken 12 long years of struggle. I have to be very careful with my dexedrine so as not to over medicate and risk mania. It's a fine line. I mostly have trouble prioritizing and getting started. Maintenance is very hard as well because depression would get in the way and it would all just devolve around me. This time, however, I'm hoping once I get everything in order, I'll be better able to maintain it because my depression is under control and the projects will be in smaller chunks and more doable. I'm giving myself plenty of time to get things in order. I have a deadline though. By October I hope to have my apartment, and finances under control. And as a bonus I'm trying to take off the last ten annoying pounds. Just for me. It's not easy to do on all these meds. But I'm adding walking to my routine so I think it's a realistic goal. I'll get back to you in 3 months and let you know how my ADHD/Bipolar project went. I think it's going to be successful. I'm fully committed to it. And I haven't been committed in nine years. Bad joke. "

" Thanks for the responses everyone.

My doc put me on Vyvanse & supplements it with Adderall. I couldn't get a doctor to give me anything for ADD for so long because they said I would go manic. I've been on ADD meds for two years now and it's changed my life from being zombied out on serequel to volunteering my time a few days a week.

I'm on disability as well for bi polar. It was very easy to get for me. I don't know how. I have tried working a few part time jobs, but after 8 months or so, i melt down still. My focus is better and my energy is excellent.

It's strange to have two different challenges in one's life. Taking alot of pills for different things starts to get old. "
