Question to everyone, do you have problems sitting down to read a book? I have so many books, but i feel like I am unable to read them. I will pick up one and try to sit still long enough to read a chapter. It is really bad. I feel like I am missing out on a whole other world.

" Before meds I couldn't even read a magazine or sit through a tv show without doing six other things! I remember shortly after I started treatment, I realized that I can listen to the words of an entire song, something I was never able to do. Setting the right environment helps to. Try and remove all possible distractions before trying to read, work or complete any task. Also set small goals..."I will read one chapter without distraction" "

" Right now Im facing the same dilema, my sis sent me a book for my bday 10/23. I managed to read the preface......Right now it's on my desk, staring at me. I grabbed it with the intent to read, then went on the computer. Oh well I did manage to clean my kitchen, almost done....... "

" I can't read a book without meds. It's virtually impossible. Haven't read a book in years. I somehow manage to garner information though.. I'm all ears and I skim magazines and newspapers. I get a different feeling on meds like."Hey. This is what it must be like for regular people. NO WONDER they can read!! Sheesh!" I'd be way ahead of the game if I could do that. I take copious notes so it will stay in my head. I need them once the meds wear off so I'll have them to refer to. I forget really easily. I think it's important to take notes. Try not to let it distract you though. "

" I have NEVER been able to read books, but I learned that it's because I'm not interested in the content! Also, they are just too long. I prefer reading articles I am interested in, instead. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to read books, despite what so many people say- I wouldn't worry about it "

" I can read non-fiction only.

I did my english literature A level as an adult and had to read books. (can't remember how many)
To manage that I got them in audio format and listened to a bit each night.

My 11 year old son(also ADHD) loves books but allthough he is an excellent reader cannot read for long and he listens to Roald Dahl stories, and Douglas Adams' Hitch-hikers' Guide to the Galaxy over and over.

We are both hoping to get meds soon and are hoping we can read the books from our shelves and local charity shops as audio books are too expensive. "

" I have just recently started meds for ADHD after expressing my concerns to my doc. Until the meds, I would take a month or longer to read 1 book because I couldn't concentrate and had a difficult time following the story line or keeping track of the characters in the book. What a joy is is to be able to read again! So many books, so little time! :O)

** Note to Leswonder~occasionally Goodwill has books on sale for 1/2 price, so you can pick up books (for kids too) for about $1. each. "
