Hi there, I am new to this group. I have a 9 year old son who has struggled academicaly since pre k. After pushing the school system unsuccessfuly for testing I finally had him diagnosed by a private party. My son has ADD so he is calm but struggles with staying focused and is "spaced out" during class. Teachers labeled him as lazy and uncooperative. One teacher even told me all he needed was a good spanking. What can I expect now that he is diagnosed? Will he be provided with support by the school or will I have to push for that too? Should I give them a good old fashioned "I told you so"?

Hi,
I went threw the same thing with my 13 yr old then was three. I found out that the school has to get a child study team provided by the Education System at NO COST to you. I suggest you call the district and immediately get the child study team on it. They have to write an IEP that states all the things they see needing to be done. I found that some places have not enough special programs and have to be forced! They get special funding for these things! You have parental rights by the state. Ask the school to send the booklet. You have to be a strong advocate for your son. He is depending on you. Hope that helps!

Hi,
If you think that youre son is falling behind or struggling academically then you arrange meetings with whoever has anything to do with your sons education to ask them what they are doing about it or what they propose to do about it and god help my boys school if they ever called my boy lazy, uncooperative or suggested a smack!!!!. My boy was officially diagnosed at 5 with adhd/odd though of course i knew long before that but so called professionals refused to listen as he was "too young"!!!!, school initially told me that they didnt have any problems with my boy (they have a good reputation around these here parts and they didnt want to rock any boats) me and mum couldnt believe what they were telling us as we had 6am angry and frustrated little boy starts every morning, after school he would run out, clothing either missing or in a mess and try to kick the nearest thing, and this carried on for most of the evening until he finally fell asleep!!!!!!!!!!!.still the school said there wasnt any problems despite me telling them that there clearly WAS, at the end of his first year they finally came clean and admitted they were struggling with him. I insisted on meeting after meeting with them where i found out that at times he had been putting his shoes in his mouth, chewing the end of tables, standing on the tables in the middle of class, they had also been taking him into other classes on his own to ask him to do star jumps for gods sake. Anyway trying to keep a very long story short i pushed his school and went to every meeting i could where my sons name was mentioned to ask what they were doing about it and after many individual programmes that the school says they tried with him his school now has extra funding to employ a teacher (15 hours a week) solely for my boy, despite being told by the school when i first raised concerns that "he would never get a statement" (extra funding) from that school. Any school has a duty of care towards any child whilst in their care both physically and educationally and if either is not being met then start to ask who their bosses are; teachers, special needs officers, head of years, headmaster, board of governors, childrens department at local goverment level, social services, youre mp/senator?, remember nobody but nobody knows that child more than you!!!!!!!! and never let anybody tell you that they do. Life is hard for us managing my boy and we have a long hard road ahead of us, but when he is older i want to be able to look that boy/young man right in the eye and say with confidence that i did my best for him,!!, fight for your boy and his rights too. I genuinely wish you all the best. Paul

If it were me, I would get him tested by the doctors again, and tell the doctors that you want documentations of the results so that you can show them to the teachers and then yes, from there you can tell them "I TOLD YOU SO" In my mind, I would think it's against the law for them to refuse to help a child in need.
My son is 10 and is ADHD. There are times when I just wanna ball and give up. My son has been on Adderall, Risperdall, Vyvanse, D-amphedamine and even though there's been mild improvement, the D-amphedamine was making him lose alot of weight where the risperdall was making him gain lots of weight and causing breathing problems, the Adderall, my son just wouldln't take it. The vyvanse took forever to get appraoved for thier program. So now we are trying what's called FOCUS formula. It's an all natural remedy with no harmful side effects what so ever. It was made in Africa, but you can buy it on line. Just go to www.focusformula.com and there are several herbal remedies you can choose from. They say it works wonders and my son has only been on it a week 1/2. We are still observing him and seeing if this really does work or not. So check it out, it may work for you. Worth a try and remember Jesus loves you!!! Don't give up. Let go and Let God!

My son has had ADD since 1st grade..according to teachers. Later we tested him and he had it. He is 17 now and gets straight A's because he is on Vyvanse.
The school is required to do an IEP. I don't know if this varies from state to state, but it is basically and Individual Education Plan. They do things like meet about the child's progress, move him to the front of class etc..It's not much help and every year you have to start the process over again. Making sure the teacher is supporting this IEP. I emailed his teachers all the time. I just kept on them because some schools will drop the ball on these kiddos. I hope you can find a solution for your child. In the end, the only thing that saved my son from an average education was a med. I just wish we had started it way before 16. Good luck to you and sorry if people already gave you this advice.

I believe my child's school has an iep also. My son's been diagnosed ever since he was in kindergarten. He's 10 now. so I can relate to Pennyphone. My son was on the vyvanse also, but we had to stop it cause they had us on this program that you can get because of income and just to get approaved for the program took forever and while waiting, my son wasn't getting the meds he needed. It was frustrating!
