Anyone have advice about meds & tics. My son has been on the same meds for over a year and just developed a shoulder tic. Socially he is already way behind and I can't imagine him back to school with this!

" I have been doing research on ADHD meds and have come across more than one expert who says that while the tics usually disappear after going off the meds, it is possible that sometimes they become permanent. I don't mean to scare you but consult your doctor!

Have you tried anything with changing your son's diet? My son developed a tic after the first 2 hours of trying Concerta so I have renewed and redoubled my efforts to work on natural remedies. I never wanted to use meds to begin with. "

" I don't really have any advice, unfortunately, but I can understand you completely! My son had a mild tic before starting meds this past April.. and it got really bad. He had a head nodding tic, which obviously was quite noticeable, and I worried about him in so many ways, socially being one of them for sure. It seemed to have gone away since school has been out, which led me to believe it was a nervous tic that was school related. However, this week the tics are back, but it has changed from a head tic to doing odd things with his mouth, which really concerns me.

My doctor said to just watch it through the summer and see if it gets worse.. in which case we have to change medications and try a non-stimulant. I don't know - it's a huge worry.. I know what you're going through! "

" My son also got a tic from the meds. It took him over a year to get the first tic. After he was off the meds the tic went away. Then he was on another med and started ticin after 4 months. We are now going to get an EEG hope to know more then. He is on no meds for ADHD and school starts soon (stressed) "

" Wow, I have no idea what to do. The therapist and the medicine pusher (the psy) both seem to think it is no biggie! He is seeing his ped for his annual Friday maybe she will feel differently. I just feel bad for him cause kids are mean and i know he will get teased even more this year! Thanks for talking, any advice is good to know! "

" I know.. I worry so much about that too. Tics with ADHD kids are quite common, I'm learning. It's hard.. on us, as well as them. Please let us know what the doc says on Friday. "

" Well the Ped says that i have got to get the Psy to address the tics at med review but you have to weigh the good & bad. This medicine seems to work good but he does have this noticeable tic now. I am going to keep with the diet changes and fish oils also.
Hopefully all of this gets better with age! His anxiety is super bad these days too and I just want my poor little man to be happy! "

" BlackVelvet....when is your son going to the neurologist? I am very curious about that because no one has said anything about that for me. My son also can't keep his hands off but it's just touching a lot no hitting or anything. I feel your stress about school starting also!!! Let me know how it goes! "

" Neurologist was never brought up to me either. I feel your stress too. I'm in the same boat; aside from the tic, the meds are working great for us! It's so stressful. And my son's anxiety has increased too.. we seem to have a lot in common. School is always a nightmare for us, and that's why I was happy this med was working so well for us, so that we could start off the new year on the right foot, but now we may have to start over again because of the tic. I feel for his self esteem too, because I know the kids will make fun of him. :( "

" My son has been on Vyvanse since June and he just recently started developing the tics and can't walk straight. My dr. told me to watch out for them and if they continue we would need to have an eeg done. We have since moved out of state and am looking into a new dr. for him. In the mean time I don't give him his pill everyday. But my sons dr. said the tics can be a form of seizures. So I am getting my son looked at by a new dr. and possibly have the eeg done to. It scares me to see him this way. "
