Discussion:
Has Christmas really LOST its meaning?

Last December in New York, at a time when the entire world was in a festive mood, there was a very unfortunate incident of Gate crashing at Walmart’s. The poor gatekeeper was trampled and ended up paying his life just for the greed of some stupid people. What needs to be understood is that it happened in NY, which on all counts is the trendsetter of US and the entire world. And definitely we cannot ignore this as a stray incident, because we all know that it happens all the time. The gatecrashers were greedy early Christmas shoppers looking out for bargains.

How people shove and push and snatch items from fellow buyers at sales after the Thanksgiving day, in order to get the best deals? How people make faces and swear when they don’t get a Christmas gift of their liking? To me it seems Christmas has lost its meaning after all, because greed and selfishness have become so rampant. We must not feign ignorance of this ugly incident in NY because this is a grim reminder of the reality check, because the gatecrashers were not Asians or immigrants but infact comprised of fellow Americans.

Interestingly (as far as my memory serves me) in the last 6 / 8 years of the annual Spelling Bee contest I haven’t seen a Christian American kid winning it. (90% Indian immigrant kids)

Is it not high time we realised that we belong to the most advanced and powerful country of the world – which does not breed ignorance, greed, selfishness, crime and loneliness. ~ ATM

" I think so, the fact that we see retailers with "holiday trees" or clerks being told to refrain from saying "merry christmas" not wanting to use the word "Christmas" while at the same time vying for those shoppers, yes things are changing, thanks to the SPs. "

" The crazy gatecrashers were trying to get the new, (at that time), IPhone. There were scuffles everywhere for that phone. Now it is soooo outdated (not my opinion). But,every season has it's "special" Christmas item that make the masses stand in line for hours to try to purchase.remember Cabbage Patch Dolls, or the Star Wars toys? Same thing, except, nobody got badly injured.Yes, Christmas has changed. We are all too PC when it comes to sticking to our old ways. We let it happen. But, I still persist and say "Merry Christmas" to store clerks. I usually get a "Merry Christmas" back from them too.I think a lot of people miss the "old days". We weren't all morphed into one type of person and we all had our individual and cultural beliefs and rituals. I miss those times. "

" you said it shelt, the "old days", otherwise known as "back in the day" lol.
I am one of those that miss the "old days", but I guess there are a lot of reasons for that! HA! "

" Well, for better of for worste, I am an eternal opptomist....I heard about the Wamart situation, and I dispaired.

I realize that it is up to me to teach my kids, and all their friends, to do the right thing....by example.

Beyond that, I have no control over LI's horrific inhumanity to man....I wish I did have control over it...I would make them all face me and ask, "what the hell were you thinking?" How could any "object" take the place of human decency?

I am so grateful that the incident appauled me and mine. Maybe there in lies the hope. "

" I think we can get back the real Christmas spirit if we start calling it the original terms. It is the Winter Solstice and the Saturnalia. That is the real reason for the season. We all should reach out to our Pagan roots. Naming a Holy Season after a person that is questionable defiles the spirit to begin with.
Christians are really big on capitalism. They corrupt the season on their own, and put the blame on none believers. It is like Nero burning Rome and blaming the Christians. Christians burn Christmas and blame it on the none Christians.
Next Christmas, say Happy Holidays and get rid of Christian based music. Play the Nutcracker and Rudolf the Red Nose Rain Deer. Have a Christ free Holiday Season and get in touch with the real spirit of the season. "

" This year, we are celebrating the birth of Christ and my family is choosing not to give gifts. Christmas just isn't what it used to be. "

" I love Christmas. I love picking out the "perfect" tree (using a democratic process), I love going to Midnight Mass with my kids and seeing all the tradition of my Catholic faith, buying presents for my kids and family, having a killer turkey dinner with my mom's recipe for the stuffing. I love to get cards from people (and I hate that I'm not better at doing the same).

Christmas for my family is the birth of Christ, so I especially love that every year, my kids fight over who will put Jesus in his manger on Christmas Day.

Don't let me get started on the Advent Wreath and Advent calendar!

Christmas is what you make of it. We choose to make it the most spiritual and fabulously fun day of the year. It's a celebration of our Lord's birth. "

" Most of the evil in the world is created or indirectly created by organized religion.
Right now, there are preachers saying healthcare is bad for all Americans. I am sorry, but they are a bunch sick puppies.
Get Christ out of Christmas, now. You will have a much better holiday.
I refuse to wear a suit. It makes me look like a politician, an accountant, a preacher, or salesman. To put them all in a single term, swindlers. I do not want the appearance of evil.
I will just keep wearing my Che' T-shirt and look forward to the Solstice. "

" Hey Mikey...you want to come to my house for Christmas? You don't have to go to church but if you choose to, you def don't have to wear a suit (maybe a nice Christmas sweater?). You can eat and hang out and burp as much as you'de like. We could even do a Winter Solstice dance! That would be fun! We'll open presents together, but you don't have to buy anything....that's our rule...buy if you want to, or do a charitable thing in someones name....and, if you're in the mood, you can place Baby Jesus in the manger on Christmas Morn'

Since the "traditions" in my family "broke down" near "the end", I've resurrected the best of my family's traditions and added some of my own. I want my kids to have better than me.

So, I have what I call a renegade Christmas...where all that don't feel they belong, belong at least on that one day. You would be a perfect fit Mikey, so come on! We need you! "

" wow!!! That was so beautiful Bitemepa, I am simply overwhelmed by your reply. That is the real old spirit of Christmas - caring and sharing. When people leave the doors open to family, friends and strangers with no motives at all. Now wouldn’t that be great if everyone starts thinking like you? But honestly over the years the values gave degraded to astonishing lows from where I don’t see a very huge pullback. But you are the silver lining – please keep up the spirit. Merry Christmas !!! "
